A Note on Boarder Collies:
They are Head Dogs/Heard Dog/Fetch Dogs and want to work ALL THE TIME Exclamation They have TONS of eye but are to SOFT to work some cattle Exclamation

If I'm not using them I half to keep them Chained On The Truck Exclamation
Where most Handlers allow then to BARK - BARK - BARK Exclamation
When I need my dog I must go get it Exclamation Crying or Very sad
My Angus Cow are always trying to eat "Overly BUSY" Border Collies

My Aussies are quite/alway by my side/and only work when I want them to - the rest of the time they can move quitly through the cattle.

They tend to "Take Hold" and or "Bark" if/when told to and they can hold their own with cattle that are Not use to dogs.

I don't know how they learn it - but if I move into a Field of Not Dog Savvy Cattle the dogs learn to get "under" my horse with-out getting stepped on - - Cattle soon learn that the dogs are "Cattle Savvy" and start to work for the dog.

It's fun to know there are cattle in a big field but I can not see them.
stand by the Gate and Tell A Dog to "GetaRound Left" or "GetaRound Right" and watch the dog disappear over a hill and come back with all the livestock in the field/pasture

Yes a border collie always wants to work, when not working ours was always tied up BUT when let off to work he only worked when Greg commanded him to work, otherwise was beside Greg or was down. we had over ninety cattle with calves at side down on our river pasture, and Jake would work until all were brought to us,standing in the back of the truck! A border is our pick of dog for sure,a blue heeler is too agressive and not great family dogs. Aussies are nice enough working dogs, gregs brothers choice of working dog! Greg found his brothers Aussies were a little timid for our needs!

I don't use my healer as a working dog, but he's the best companion i've ever had. I live in town, and in NY i have to be careful, and i walk a lot with gas being $2.99/gal and I take Odin with me ever since the one day when this guy came out from behing the tree and grabbed a hold of me. My healer was chasing and nipping his heals until he was at least 3 blocks away and came back as soon as i whistled, so he's more for my protection, but when i bring in my horses at my ma's and the horses won't come in he'll go get them for me, sometimes Embarassed

i checked head dogs
i work on a yearling outfit and we have to weigh them so if they run off we lose money so i need dogs to hold them up and make them walk
we have used all kinds of dogs though the years and we have kelpies now and i like them the best for the work we do here
we can replace 2 men with one dog and with day wages what they are that makes dog food pretty cheap
