She had some really great times on her new horse, but didnt make the finals. There were 98 riders there doin barrels, poles, and stake race. I was pleased with how she done, she was right up there in the fast times, there were a whole bunch right up there with her tho LOL For a new horse, it was exellent. Only thing that disappointed me was the condition of the arena. I've never seen a place as big and nice facility like the one in Katy is, have such sorry ground. It was packed hard like concrete with only about 2 inches of loose dirt on top. This was an indoor arena too. They ran poles first, and about the first 30 or so had a real bad time with horses fallin down with kids. When I saw how bad it was, I told her, to just go make a clean run, no sense in gettin her or her horse hurt. They did haul one girl to the hospital when her horse went down. Barrels wern't quite as bad about havin horses slip and fall, but it still wasn't great. You'd think they'd take better care to have their ground in good shape.

The problem is you have a bunch of county agents trying to put this on and a lot of them don't know how to maintane the arena for a horse competition. I think they do their best though
They should hire someone to do the work
At our competition a couple of the parents actually go and help since they have more experienced

i am happy she had some pretty good times but sorry you guys didn't make abilene, I hope it didn't dissapoint her to much

She was disappointed, her best friend qualified for state with her stakes run. They sooooo wanted to go together, but maybe next year after she gets more time on this horse. Ever time they run she's gettin a lil faster. District was Wednesday, and then she ran again in an open barrel race saturday night, and ran a 16.996. Shoulda seen the beamin smile on her face that night LOL. That's her fastest time so far on him.

Ground affects some horses more than others, too, Lilly. That hard
ground might have slowed the horse down, which is not a bad thing
in the overall picture.

Guys get upset at Barrell Racers because they are so picky about the ground. Truth be known, have the arena prepared correctly helps the
rope horses too.

Mr. FH went to a team roping once and the ground was full of rocks. I don't mean rocks on top, I mean big rocks that stuck out of the ground.
He wouldn't enter after he saw that. Wasn't worth risking his horse over. There were a few others that did the same, but mostly the ropers didn't seem to mind taking the chance. That's the difference between barrel
racers and ropers. Barrel racers want the ground the best for the horses and the don't like taking chances on bad ground. IMO, anyway.

What really upset me was all the parents out there screamin "kick kick" "hurry hurry" knowin full well that some had already went down.

When the grounds bad and I know it ahead of time, Lil Lilly bein in back on her horse doesn't always have the opportunity to know how it is. She carries her cell phone with her, and I'll call her and tell her what I'm seein. Gives her a chance to be prepared for what the arena's like, and how to ride. Theres no sense whatsoever in takin a chance on a kid gettin hurt, or hurtin a good horse. Most places we go she's always ridin with some friends. She'll hand her cell phone to someone else to hold, and does the same for them. Before cell phones I was runnin back and forth to whereever she was at lettin her know things that she needed to know.

We've loaded up and left places that have had big rocks in the arena. If they can't do better than that they don't need our entry fee.
