Lot of them are finding this area now- rich lawyers, corporate execs, doctors from all over the country buying up land at excessive prices...Some are using it as retirement farms/ranchs- some only show up at hunting time....

Doesn't this just make ya yearn for the "good old days".....I simply love taking care of one of the old-timers here in the valley who remembers when this valley was RANCHERS ONLY!! No foreigners and everyone still knew everyone and it was very neighbor friendly!! Hate to see any small, rural community lose that!! Sad

Reading your post, ranchwife, I guess I don't really know what a 'gated community' is. Would you please elaborate, since your son is working on the project.

They will have stores, too, you say? I bet that isn't good news for downtown businesses. Poor little Deer Lodge, it has struggled and struggled with the economy as things continually died on the vine.
There used to be a lot of jobs there but with Anaconda Co. going out,
Cominco going out, Milwaukee Railroad going out, and loggers being hard pressed...it's incredible the economic base Deer Lodge has lost since we moved there in 1975.

I'm suprised at the activity/interest from out-of-state money people
since the prison is right there. That seemed to keep Deer Lodge from growing like some of the other communities, or so I thought.

FH------I had also hoped that having a maximum security prison only a few miles from the planned "development" would also stop these folks in their tracks, but NOOOOO!! My understanding is that they will be pretty self-sufficient with airstrip, spa, health club, "shops", etc!! The vast majority of deer lodge residents are NOT excited about their new neighbors, but what could they have really done besides protest!!

I had a friend come to pull a shift at our hospital recently ( a travel nurse whose mom is/was? a judge in town) and she told me that I could now rent out my little house (the one that I bought from my dad for $1) for $400-$500 a month or just sell it outright since they are also buying up all the available homes and surrounding land!! My little place is on 2nd street, little 2 bedroom "granny house"!!! You cannot even find rentals in Deer Lodge anymore due to all the construction and other folks coming in!! Makes me downright sad!! What scares me is the thought of someone breaking outta the pen....ya just know where they are gonna head for!!
Shocked Shocked

My small little town has already been invaded. And just wait till you have to deal with their spoiled rotten kids. A mobile home on 2.5 acres here sells for about 279,000. It amazes me that suddenly we aren't hicksville anymore but yet a trendy place to live. Oh I wish I could find 20 acres here, but I don't have a cool 2.2 million.

Copper-Just thought I'd make ya aware of something about San Antonio area. Maybe ya know about it already, but Toyota truck is building an extensive complex in that area. Its an "industrial community" in which they ask all their suppliers to be involved in. In short, theres goin to be alot of factories in that area. Ya can check it out at www.sanantonioedf.com. I got hit with something like that 3 yrs. after I built my place Mad County officals didn't bother to publicize it until the deal was closed.

L.E.

Thanks for the site. It looks like the area we are looking at is about 1hr east I think. Did you have a big place?

Not as big as I'd like, but mostly due to the problem of the industrial build-up. Property values jumped based on potential worth to new industry. So anyone in ag was suddenly competing with developers & industrialists for ground in our area and ya probably can guess who has the greater purchasing power.
