We brought him back to his home (not our home) about a week and a half ago. He can't put weight on the leg at all...or won't. He would for a few days at the vets..then he wouldn't. It went back and forth. He eats and drinks fine. Can do anything you ask him to do hoppin on 3 legs. If it were up to me I'd have put the horse down. But the owner still wants to give him a chance. Leg injuries can take so long to heal. The actual wound looks perdy good. Still keeping it wrapped, changing bandages....hand walkin/hoppin him every day....But I don't know that he'll ever be able to walk on it??? Since he's not our horse it's not our place to make the decision. He doesn't seem to be in pain. Doesn't bother him when you change the bandage etc......so I guess we'll see.

Lilly is there still alot of new growth on the wound? If it's still covering over some days I'm sure it feels pinchy and other days it wouldnt. Don't give up on him yet, you just never know. If he was in pain I would day to put him down but if they feel he isnt that uncomfortable well hey? Who knows Smile

Oh yeah it's still covering. I'll try to take a picture of it the next bandage change and show ya'll. Still quite a bit of uncovered area...but the "meat" looks wonderful.
He's always excited to get a halter on and go for his walks/hops LOL Never refuses to do anything you want him to. Still in good condition, hasn't lost too much weight. He was butterball fat when it happened. I don't always go out there with Mr Lilly and Lil Lilly, but I'll make a point to so I can get pictures.

Lil, I thank you for sharing this story.

I do totally understand your feelings of euthanizing the horse and I do understand someone who won't give up.

I was telling someone about a horse I had to euthanize..their answer?..."Weezy that should have been done a year ago"...sometimes our vision is clouded by our heart... Crying or Very sad

Ok..here's a picture of when it happened after the vet cleaned it...just figured it would be easier to compare then and now with the pictures on the same page. Picture on the right is today before it was rewrapped.

All redressed and wrapped.

Looks a lot better but still.. yuck..... Suprised the other legs aren't having problems with him having to put all his weight on just the three.. Hard for the horse when you think that they are putting all their weight on 4 middle finger/toe nails...

Thankfully there hasn't been any problems so far with his other hind leg. We keep it wrapped with a support wrap.

It does look alot better now than then. Leg wounds take forever to heal Mad

Wow, he's looking fantastic! It's amazing how well those flesh wounds heal. I have an old grey mare that has an 18 inch scar on her neck, I can only imagine just how gross it was when it first happened!

That is such a nasty cut.
You ladies are to be commended for what you have done.
As a vet told me once, "there is something to be said for
persistence."

You have dedication and persistence.
My hat is off to you both.

Thanks for the pics. I suspect it will look pretty good in 6 to 8 weeks.
