I worked at a salebarn where they had horse sales and been to quite a few.

The Horse Sale

I was at a horse sale
just takin’ a little walk
when to my surprise
I heard some horses talk

“Hey, you, the sorrel”
a big, stout bay said
“You was in the kill pen at Billings
I thought by now you’d be dead.”

“Naw” was the reply
“I’m doin’ just fine
A trader bought me for a ride thru’
He tells the crowd I’m just nine”

“I don’t understand tho’
‘cause I was born fifteen years ago
but he’s the man who’s ridin’ me
so I guess he ought'a know.”

“Hey paint, whats your story?"
“Well, my man says I’m plumb sound
and since he gave me that shot
my leg feels good, when it hits the ground.”

A big buckskin then nicker’d
“Whats an experienced rider mean?
My riders always get bucked off.
I hate every person, I’ve ever seen.”

A young 3 year old called over
“Hey you guys. Whats a cow?
My rider says I’m a started cuttin’ horse
but I don’t think I know how.”

“The only thing I’ve ever done
is trot around in a arena.
I’m sure scared of that club he uses.
Why does he call me Purina?”

I listen’d some more
but got plumb tired of the game
every horse had a story,
but they were all ‘bout the same

There were finished rope horses
who never saw a rope.
Cripples who had gotten shots
like a junkie with his dope.

This conclusion I’ve reached
and to really be plumb fair
there’s good trainers, but also horsetraders
so the buyer, damn sure, better beware!

OOOOooo that was a good 'un!!!!

I remember when Alex Ogilvie had a dispersion before he went
to Australia. He put out a catalog that was a horse traders classic.
Oh, how I wish I still had a copy of that! I even asked him about
one later but they didn't have any they could get their hands on.

One thing I do remember he put in the front of the catalog:

"We have horses for everyone. We have tall horses for tall people.
We have short horses for short people. We have horses that
don't like to be rode, for people who don't like to ride."

thats the funniest damn thing i've ever read. and so very true.i had a buckskin this past year that was the best looking horse you could imagine. the old fart i bought him from said he was still a lil green but would only make about 2 jumps and then settle down. well, i dont think he was lying. it's just that nobody had ever lasted longer than two jumps till i came along. i had the sonofagun rode till my left rein broke. this joker wasnt doing anything but gatherin' steam. man , did he have some power. what an awesome suckback too. i found this out when i 'bout got a prostate exam via the saddle horn. needles to say this bronc ride went to hell in a hand basket in a big hurry. a busted left elbow and cracked right wrist sealed this horses fate to the kill pen. took him to st.onge s.d. and the traders went wild. every dang one of them asked the story. being a semi pro stockbroker myself i gave'em all the scoop. i said there was a reason that i was sellin' the s.o.b and i hoped that he went to make dogfood. i figured that was about as honest as i could get. we left him there to run thru with the killers. much to our surpise i made $250 on the deal. but, i had to laugh because i know some of those traders and i would have given the $250 i made if i could have been there when they got on him. a few weeks later the man who sold him to me said he had another good gentle horse for sale if i was interested. i let him know under no uncertain terms that he has sold me the last gentle horse that he ever will.

Yep, he was. One of his daughters, Marty,
I am proud to call one of my best friends.

He is in the VA Hospital in Sheridan, Wyoming now.
His wife still has horses at Worland, Wyoming.
She ranks right up there with one of the best horsewomen
going. They sold their place at Florence, Mt. several years back.

The stallion, 'Missin Freckle' is their stallion. He won some
prestigiuos stallion award at the
Black Hills Stock Show. about 3 years ago.
I can't remember the name of the
award, darn it, but he sure is a good horse.
I think he is Missin Cash and Colonel Freckles.

The youngest girls names are Skye and Blue and
they had the Blue Sky Arena at Florence. Our daughter
spent a lot of time with them when he husband was injured
and in rehab at Missoula.

I watched the one with the flaming red hair ride bulls.
Those girls have NO FEAR.

I went to Deadwood with him and Lynn Weishar once that was an event right there. I always liked my week at Sturgis every spring-between him and dr. Ismay I was thoroughly entertained. There was a guy whose first name was Dana that worked at the yards too was alot of fun also. I'm going to have to make a trip back down therte I think lol.

Well when you stop in say hi for me-he might not remember those crazy canadians but he might-hope he doesn't mix me up with some of the wildies I've travelled with.
