I saddle my horse at the barn, and rather than load him up I ride out from there. Wink
When noon comes around his saddle doesn't come off, cuz chances are I'm still in it. And he wont get switched out cuz I refuse to lead a spare horse all day! Laughing Laughing

Silver, That was a great come back. You just made all the rest of us look like hobby horsemen!

The fellows I mentioned don't lead a spare horse all day either.
They tie the colt up where they are going to be sorting.
They sort on the colt and do the rest of the work on a mature
horse. It's 54 miles from the headquarters to the back of their
place and home again. (84 by vehicle). Much too far to ride a young horse with
no way of trading off, unless they have one along. Depending
on where they are going, they don't haul
in trailers much, the country is too rough, and they have to cross
the river. Hard to do that in a pickup and trailer.

They know they need to save their horses. And they ride
really good ones.

Shoot, I certainly wasn't trying to make anyone look like hobby horsemen. There's lots of folks on here more 'horseman' than me. I'm just fortunate to be on a place that's all one chunk, you can't pull a trailer to the far end of it, and I got no reason to do a bunch of sorting at the far end of the range. If I did I suppose I'd camp at the far end and use the same horse the next morning. But I find that in these parts a horse thats used much can be rode and worked over a stretch of 25 - 30 miles in a day without much trouble. If you're gonna do that around here that means no real breaks or you miss supper.

Wow i guess its a little different than most down here. Everyone I know hauls with saddle on,and i have only known one person to haul without headgear too,I dont tie my horses either. Also I was taught to ALWAYS get a horse to back out of a trailer for you (stock trailer that is,never used a "horse" trailer).Wow would i ever look like a fool in some of yall's country... Shocked Lol,it would be kindve funny tho. :lol:Also, has anyone else been taught to put your colts in the back petition to learn them how to ride in a trailer?Ive been force fed this one my whole life so i do it,it seems to work allright i guess, but between yall and me,I cant tell any real difference. And as far as the one piece "swing trailer gates" with the slide gate , Oh man, dont get me started,i just dont see a real advantage to havin em unless youre going to be backing up to alot of chutes.I mainly dont like them because their tendencies to come aloose at the worst times.I havent really heard of good ole butterfly gates comin loose, but i still chain and snap mine,I figure an extra 10 seconds is better than loosin whatever youre hauling.

The main reason you teach a horse to back out of a trailer is, so that IF you had one that was to get in a hurry to get out, he won't drag you out, or run over you gettin out in the process. Backin out...they go nice and easy. Takes a lil while to teach em how to do it......but I'm much more comfortable backin one out than I am tryin to turn one around and walk out with it.

We have one that will back out real fast..unless you tell him as he goes, "Easy.....easy....easy....." then he's fine.
