Well if he's a lead steer he best get in the lead.

Maybe that lead steer's smarter than he's given credit for. He knows it's cold and lonely out there in the lead......so he doesn't go there!

We have an old steer around here... We use him more as a babysitter for calves when we wean them but he hangs with the yearling heifers when they are learning the ropes of the place.. They seam to feel better having someone "big" around.. We don't keep them till they are 7 however.. The one we have right now is 3.5 and the sucker is taller than me.. Told the kid who came and helped band the other day that he was next... I think the kid dropped something...

We've just never had a use for one. When we need to get the herd somewhere, there's never a problem having someone volunteer to lead. We call, maybe rattle a pail, and the same 2 or 3 old girls lead the way, whether it's through the gate to the next paddock, or 10 miles home for the fall gather.

Yeap same here, we have about 3 or 4 that'll be the first one's to come runnin when it's time to feed, time to move....whatever..always the same one's. For a long time we had a 1/2 longhorn old cow......she was THE ONE......She'd run along side the truck at feedin time tryin to hook the tires. I hated her. She wasn't really intentionally hookin at the tires, but more just happy and hoppin along, half buckin. I was always afraid tho that she would one day get one of the tires....she never did....She was 15 when she finally came up open and we sent her down the road. I wondered if we'd have anyone step up to take over lead cow position......LOL n now we have the new set.......wonder if when they are gone they'll have 3 or 4 to take each of their positions......perdy soon that could become a mob situation LOL Laughing

In case you haven't noticed he's standing behind a closed gate-he always gets in the lead-if you'd ever ran a bunch of yearlings you'd know that they like to follow something bigger than them-we run an easy to handle dry cow with the heifers and 'Sweedums' with the cowherd or steers. I've had to handle 'choppail' cattle before not quite the same. Besides every ranch needs a character and that old steer sure is one lol.

Yup, the are the cats pajama's for yearlings.

But I guess those who would rather use a whole bunch of "cowboys" to move yearlings don't need them. Wink

And if you have one with cows and calves they make an excellent babysetter for the calves and I doubt a feller would lose any to varmints. Smile

When I ain't got enough extra grass to run a big steer, I guess I'll just sell my saddle. Crying or Very sad
