Ben H - I knocked a few downers on the head working part time at a feedlot a few years back. We used the back of an axe. Always carried it checking pens so you could chop ice away from the water bowls, and on the top of the head, just behind the poll, you could kill mature bulls with a well placed smack.

Ruger mini 30 Ranch rifle 7.62X39 ammunitions cheap enough, low recoil, comes with scope rings if you choose to use a scope, dependable, available blued or stainless, good for both applications
