In this part of SD, at least, it does cost so much per mile to put NEW lines in. If we wanted to build a home or ranch project requiring power, we would have to pay the cost of installing lines. It is very expensive.
We should be able to put in our own wind power plants and sell the excess power to the power company out here, but I believe the REA's, or at least some of them, are fighting this. If they allow it, it is fairly recent, as I KNOW they didn't a few years ago.
Similar situation exists with rural water. Those who signed up for it years ago and paid a fee can get it to the location(s) they applied for, but if you need it elsewhere, you pay the costs and assume liability for repairs and water leaks on your lines.
