Yesterday was the nicest day of spring so far, but not for Sadie, our son's heeler/collie cross. I was feeding the cows when a few wandered out the gate to munch on a bale sitting just outside the feeding yard.

Knowing they wouldn't go too far, I just kept on with the feeding and knew they would come back before I was finished.

But not Sadie - she couldn't wait. For some reason, obsessive/compulsive comes to mind when I think about Sadie.

I didn't see what happened; all I know is that the 3 cows came back to the gate on the trot and I heard Sadie screaming/yelping and doubled up in pain, dragging herself across the lane toward the back lawn. Her legs all worked but she seemed to have one heck of a sore gut.

I suspect she snuck up behind the cows and got one heck of a kick in the stomach or chest area.

She is looking a little brighter this A.M. but still very sore and sorry looking.

A good dog, big in willingness and try but just a little shy on the understanding part . . .

I am sure hoping she feels better. They are tough little guys but you do get a feeling of helplessness when they are hurt. Sad

Dogs are pretty tough. If you have some Banamine to help out with the pain it will make her feel better. The vets usually just cost money. Keep her comfy and don't let her get back to work to quick.

My old Monte dog got ran over by a bull in some pretty deep mud 2 springs ago. Broke both hind legs, 1 swinging and the other would hold a little of his weight. We had to hold his tail so he could go out and do his thing while healing. The vet told me $4000 per leg or would likely heal well on its own.

Monte is 13 now and is still helping. (in an old man sort of way Very Happy )

If her tummy gets hard feeling...she's bleeding internally.

If you want to save her get her to vet if you notice that.

Well she is up and around a lot more toward noon today bit still walks a bit humpy backed like a coon runs. I haven't replaced the bottle of Cronyxin (Banamine equivalent) since the barn burned so she is getting 1 Tylenol twice a day.

Got quite a bit of the wag back in her tail so that's a good sign. Pretty sore though. I've been watching for swelling or hardness in her tummy but no sign of that at this point.

She must have gotten one awful kick because I've seen her spun right around off of a cow's hoof before and never backed off an inch because of it.

Tylenol ????? WOW Please be very careful is giving this drug....many dogs have been killed by it. Buffered Aspirin is much safer! here is a link to some very good info about dogs and pain killers!

Thank you Chicks! That was a good link and a valuable thing to learn. Sounds like that is not the first drug of choice in the future.

Sadie is up and about again but still moving quite carefully. I don't think she will be helping to move cows for a while yet! Confused

Well we gave her Cronyxin (flunixin) for 3 days and she is almost back to normal. It will be interesting to see how she acts when her last shot wears off.
