I don't have a video of this...but I will before long. Tank has an issue that Lil Lilly just can't seem to get him past/over. He's been on barrels maybe six months. 10 year old gelding.
Ok here's what he does. When she tries to slow work, he doesn't wanna trot. He'll walk fine. But at a trot, or slow lope about two stride he leaps forward. He's just wantin to run. But he needs to learn that he hasta go the speed she wants, not what he wants. Ok when he does this, she's been turnin him into a circle and workin him hard for a lil bit, then go back and try it again. He just keeps doin it. Any ideas on what she can do with him to break him from doin this? Sometimes he'll do it between 1st and 2nd if she tries to hold him back. It's like, in his mind, he thinks he's a finished barrel horse and doesn't wanna do slow work. He just wants to go go go all the time. He's fine at a walk....other than you can tell he really would rather be runnin.

| As you know I'm not a barrelracin expert..but with a horse we had that all he wanted to do is run...never trot...we did set up barrels for practice and made him go around them in all kinds of directions...not a barrel pattern, but turning him around the barrels to get him to slow down, cause he always wanted to run straight..it helped alot once he figured that he could trot and turn at the same time...so maybe by NOT doing the regular pattern will make him pay attention and wonder where to next??? Other than that...I have no idea...lol Good luck!

Have you thought about contacting Joyce in Buffalo Tx?
As many Barrel horses and Barrel racers as she has trained I am sure she knows what needs to be done.

Yeap hehe. Lil Lilly would look like that fella someone posted pictures of....ridin his horse cross country.
I'm really leanin towards maybe hock problems on this deal. And wouldn't ya know it, gotta appt with the vet today for a different horse. I sure would like to toss him in the trailer too and have them check him out while we are there. It's an hours drive......but I know how it is when someone brings extra, messes up their whole schedule. But I am gonna call and see if he has time to look at him.

Okay, since I did sleep at a Holiday Inn, here is my free advice.
There is nothing wrong physically with tank... I think he is ready to compete at a higher level... Lilly needs to let that boy run... Whip and ride girl he's bored and anticipating the first barrel.... I would say that he may be the type to pull down the road and just keep legged up... I don't know if I would do much practicing on him... I think he is a turn a burn type....
My old rope horse was as fast as lightening, but he had one rule and that was you be ready to rope, cuz when he was backed into the box, you better nodd and ride cuz he was going to be there.. Two swings and you were there. You didn't catch and he would pout. And you never threw two lopes cuz he would scotch on ya every time..
Let us know how ya turn out... First barrel looks pretty good from the view, but way wide on the second, third is decent...

He had some ulcers in the back of his mouth and a blind wolf tooth. The vet floated his teeth, very thorough ( I don't normally like the way vets do teeth ) but he did a good job. Then he split the gum and removed the tooth.
They did a full lameness exam, and turned up clean on all that. So that's good. So in a few days she can get back on him, and see what he does now. He said if he continues to leap....then it's between his ears and he needs some schoolin LOL Which I already knew. But it's possible that his mouth was botherin him enuff to do this.
Cash got another accupuncture treatment, along with chiro, but over all he's alot less sore. His head slingin they think, is caused from TMJ. But with the treatments they did two weeks ago, now he's not slingin his head nearly as bad as he was.
