I glanced at the article in yesterday's newspaper, but the name didn't register.

Today, visiting with an implement dealer, he asked if I'd heard the news about the kidnapping. I was surprised when he mentioned the guy's name and reminded me I'd met the fellow one day there in his shop. I immediately knew who he was describing as I'd exchanged cell phone numbers with him and discussed visiting his place one day.

Hope things work out. No contact yet according to my buddy.

That is what happens in a 3rd world country. Same happens in the Philippines. There is no way I would let my wife go back without she is met at the airport by an associate of mine and transported to the family home 6 hours north of Manila with an armed driver and another armed associate riding "shotgun". Life is too short to let a couple hundred bucks get in the way of loved ones being safe.

I hope things turn out alright for the gentleman.

You best watch out for yourself, too.

Usually one of the local police forces is involved.....this one occurred in broad daylight in the middle of a town about 45 minutes drive from my place.

Another problem here is that usually no one wants to get involved....fear of reprisals from the bad guys.

Thanks for the words of caution too. I'm always armed, always, and try to stay on guard in all situations. If the day comes when I suddenly find myself amongst a bunch of armed guys, bullets will fly. I'll likely die if outnumbered, but I'm not going down without a decent fight.

It will. It always does.

As I've said before, living here is something like living in the old west of the US except we drive pickups instead of horses.

Itīs now been a week and a day and so far, silence.

This one smacks of high level involvement.

So Whitewing, who is targeted mostly with these abductions, foreigners or is it landowners & businessmen?

I hope the fellow gets out of this situation soon.

Iīve never heard of a foreigner being kidnapped here.....at least not this type of kidnapping......along the Colombian border, most certainly a foreigner would be a target, but this occurred far from any border.

The few kidnappings I recall with detail tended to be really wealthy, or members of the family of the really wealthy.

I think it was back in 2005 that here in the city there was a series of kidnappings of kids of local Arabic businessmen. One attempted kidnapping ended with the victim fighting back, killing one of the kidnappers and getting killed himself in the process.

There was another kidnapping that was already a couple of weeks old and the death of that kidnapper lead investigators of the Federal Police to resolve the crime that was still in progress. The whole thing ended with a big shootout on a local highway between the Federal Police and the State Police who, as it turned out, were involved in the kidnapping! Something like 9 or 10 policemen on both sides were killed, as well as an attorney and the kidnapping victim who was in the car at the time.

It was a true Venezuelan coje culo. Very Happy

As I said, often the police or military are involved at some level though I donīt recall the military ever receiving any blame.

Thanks for asking BMR. I asked that question of someone late last week as it was approaching 3 weeks since the kidnapping.......they hadnīt heard anything. That doesnīt mean it hasnīt been resolved.

I also just called a good contact who should know something but he didnīt answer the phone.

Iīll follow up on it and let you know where it all stands.

Still nothing. This one is really odd. It'll be a month tomorrow.
