This is a story about a mutilation that happened sometime ago on our ranch. I wrote it shortly after it happened so it is accurate.
We had cows and calves over a range of hills north of our headquarters.Cows that we hadn't brought into the heavy lot were just across the fence from the cows and calves in what we called the North Meadow. I drove up to cake the two bunches and found a big 200 pound heifer calf that was dead. Her mother was in a nervous state. What made this a very abnormal situation was, after examining the calf, she had three perfect circles of hide taken from her body, one of them under her tail, one from where her udder would be and one from the middle of her belly. These circles were about six inches in diameter. Just across the fence, in the meadow where the cows were that hadn't yet calved, I found two new born calves side by side, both of them dead. There were no cattle there. They were on the far side of the meadow.
Clyde Weber was deputy sheriff at that time. I loaded the calf up that was mutilated and took it to Clyde's shop. Clyde was out of town but I showed it to several others. Dr. John Bunner was in the shop that day. He told me had no idea what kind of tools were used to make such perfect circles and only taking the hide with no damage to the muscles. It definitely couldn[t have been done by a native predator of any kind. I didn't have time to show it to anyone else so took the calf home and went aboutt he many things that had to be done with cattle to feed and cows calving. That evening I called neighbor, Ronald Snyder, and told him about the mysterious event that had happened. He told me he had awakended during the night with a start and went for his gun. He went to the door and looked outside and didnt hear or see aniything but he knew sometihng was amiss..
I thought to take pictiures of the calf but not until the next day when the circles had dried and weren't as perfect as they had been. I wish Ihad taken some close-ups sooner. The precision and perfection were iunbelievable. I welcome any explanation or like experiences biy any one else. (End of original story)
This happened about 35 years ago but is almost an exact happening to what is reported here..

There was a new story about this kinda thing in the Nat Geo channel the other day.
Ranching around here is about gone and over. People selling/sold out. Me included.

The pictures in the above post were taken in June of 1992.
I really didn't believe it was anything unatural, but I took the pictures in case something similiar turned up. I showed them to several people most thought it strange. Then I showed it to our veterinarian, he said it was a natural occurance, I tended to agree although a little hard to explain. I think the cuttings on the steers face was done by eagles. The other was a hole in the hide then the hot sun shrunk the hide. What do you think?
