my buddy moved into a new house and couldnt take his dog with him so he gave it to me. "Bull" is a 3 yo blue heeler.

it was hot enough that day for me to want to jump in the trough with the dog. Shocked

Justin- that is a sugar kettle that dates back to the early 1800s. to think its withstood all the hurricanes down here. now its actually in the horse pasture as a water trough. i put a 5 gallon bucket in the kennel for Bull and he stuck is front feet in it and knocked it over. i think ill need the bigger water bowl Laughing

Looks like the iron pot/kettles that are used to cook ribbon cane juice when ya make syrup.

exactly. back in the old days before huge sugar mills, louisiana growers would use 4 of these to process the sugar out of cane. this one is what they call the batterie, which is the last kettle in the process. its also the smallest kettle used in the process. Pretty much this kettle was used to "strike" the syrup, which if done right would crystalize the syrup into sugar. If the strike was off, it created molasses. theres a long history on the old way of making sugar down here.

but we dont do sugar cane on our farm. wayy too messy. grinding is during the middle of winter in the worst weather we get in south la. ill stick to my grains so i can hunt. Cool

Mr Lillys grandparents made ribbon cane syrup every winter. Cut it after the first frost and get to squeezin at the syrup mill. I'd so love to get that part of the garden back into action. We had to take the press apart and down...because it sat by the road...and there were just toooooo many folks stoppin and askin if we wanted to get rid of it....we were afraid it would disappear one night. So it's now in the barn. Still have all the stuff to put it back into use. Just need to find time to do it.
