It’s easy of course, for liberals to laugh off Ms. Palin’s “you go, girl!” ethos and increasingly aggressive co-optation of feminist symbols. We progressives discount her references to the women’s movement — not to mention her validity as a candidate — by looking down on her as a dim, opportunistic, mean-girl prom queen, all spunk and no policy muscle.

But the sad truth is that Democrats often prefer their women fulfilling similarly diminutive models for behavior. Consider how Hillary Clinton has been treated, at times, by those in her own party: Democratic leaders never really celebrated Mrs. Clinton’s nation-altering place in history as the first female candidate to get so close to a major party’s presidential nomination. Indeed, she is most appreciated when she plays well with others in the Senate or the State Department; when she behaves like a fierce competitor, she is compared to Glenn Close’s bunny-boiling virago from “Fatal Attraction.”

The left’s failure to nurture and celebrate female politicians has had a significant effect on its policies. In recent years, Democratic majorities and progressive legislation seem to have been built on steady trade-offs of reproductive rights, culminating this year when the first female speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, was forced to push through health care reform with a compromise on abortion financing.

An older generation of female Democrats, including Mrs. Clinton and Ms. Pelosi, are about as eager to mount a Palin-style girl-powered campaign as they are to wear a miniskirt on the House floor. For them, proudly or aggressively touting one’s feminist credentials (if you’re actually a feminist, that is) is taboo. It’s considered too, well, female.

But as women of a different generation — of, gulp, Sarah Palin’s generation — we wonder if Democrats shouldn’t look to her for twisted inspiration, and recognize that the future of women in politics will be about coming to terms with (and inventing) new models.

Imagine a Democrat willing to brag about breaking the glass ceiling at the explosive beginning, not the safe end, of her campaign. A liberal politician taking to Twitter to argue that big broods and a “culture of life” are completely compatible with reproductive freedom. A female candidate on the left who speaks as angrily and forcefully about her rivals’ shortcomings as Sarah Barracuda does about the Pelosis and Obamas of the world. A smart, unrelenting female, who, unlike Ms. Palin, wants to tear down, not reinforce, traditional ways of looking at women. But that will require a party that is eager to discover, groom, promote and then cheer on such a progressive Palin.

If Sarah Palin and her acolytes successfully redefine what it means to be a groundbreaking political woman, it will be because progressives let it happen — and in doing so, ensured that when it comes to making history, there will be no one but Mama Grizzlies to do the job.

there are several strippers in Washington DC that have more sense that Palin. She is just a stupid bimbo that appeals to morons. Like Steve, Larry, and Mike.

she is all that is wrong with this country. anyone that thinks she is president material needs their head examined. but this country did elect an illegal alien black. so, anything is possible.

she got her passport in 2008 or so. she says she can see russia from alaska so she would be great at foreign relations...this is about you guys intelligence level though.

Can you not see Russia from Alaska, that's news to me. Being an Albertan, we can even see Montana from Alberta.

Seems like you have been believing too much of what you hear on SNL.

Who said she is Presidential material?

She was running for VP. So now the guy that gets his news from SNL wants to debate whether Palin is smarter than Biden. Laughing Laughing

Hey Bozo,

You're a liar. She never said that that would make her good at Foreign Relations. Don't start stooping to Oldtimer's level any more than you already have. She said it makes them our neighbor. Rolling Eyes

One liar is enough here.

just by the attacks Palin received it show that liberals are unable to understand "equal" rights and gender based equality...

I think Palin is an accomplished woman (mayor , Governor as well as strong political leader) and as qualified if not more so then the current president.

here is what the stupid beach said:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXL86v8NoGk

And the rest of the story would go like this:

"GIBSON: Let me ask you about some specific national security situations.

PALIN: Sure.

GIBSON: Let's start, because we are near Russia, let's start with Russia and Georgia.

The administration has said we've got to maintain the territorial integrity of Georgia. Do you believe the United States should try to restore Georgian sovereignty over South Ossetia and Abkhazia?

PALIN: First off, we're going to continue good relations with Saakashvili there. I was able to speak with him the other day and giving him my commitment, as John McCain's running mate, that we will be committed to Georgia. And we've got to keep an eye on Russia. For Russia to have exerted such pressure in terms of invading a smaller democratic country, unprovoked, is unacceptable and we have to keep...

GIBSON: You believe unprovoked.

PALIN: I do believe unprovoked and we have got to keep our eyes on Russia, under the leadership there. I think it was unfortunate. That manifestation that we saw with that invasion of Georgia shows us some steps backwards that Russia has recently taken away from the race toward a more democratic nation with democratic ideals. That's why we have to keep an eye on Russia.

And, Charlie, you're in Alaska. We have that very narrow maritime border between the United States, and the 49th state, Alaska, and Russia. They are our next door neighbors. We need to have a good relationship with them. They're very, very important to us and they are our next door neighbor.

GIBSON: What insight into Russian actions, particularly in the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of the state give you?

PALIN: They're our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska.

GIBSON: What insight does that give you into what they're doing in Georgia?

PALIN: Well, I'm giving you that perspective of how small our world is and how important it is that we work with our allies to keep good relation with all of these countries, especially Russia. We will not repeat a Cold War. We must have good relationship with our allies, pressuring, also, helping us to remind Russia that it's in their benefit, also, a mutually beneficial relationship for us all to be getting along. "

It is in your best interest to make sure that you either include it all or say that it is a cut of her statement---a statement that is cut merely to make someone look bad only ends up making the user of said statement look worse---------

One more thing Shaumei, since I do not want to bring the thread back to the top---I watched your video where you said you had evidence of them defusing the other two bombs. No such thing in the entire video. What you call evidence, I call three newspeople saying "And we are receiving word" but no video to back that up---they didn't even realize at this point what the first "bomb" was-------you lack evidencial material--case closed.

On Oklahoma City Bombing, you have peoples testimony that was never published or brought to trial that says there were bombs there.

More importantly, why has the FBI refused to release the video tapes until just the last 12 months that would have proven bombs went off inside the building prior to the truck bomb?

They know that morons like yourself will believe anything the govt says till they see them putting the bombs inside the building, telling you what you are seeing, and then blowing up the buildings. I have bad news for you....the govt is not going to make it that obvious for the fluoride induced comas most of you are in....you need to TRY TO USE YOUR BRAIN.

on Palin:

GIBSON: What insight into Russian actions, particularly in the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of the state give you?

She says she can see Russia as her answer...this is just moronic. she can see russia but has never actually even been to russia. I have been many times personally.

Tell the board all you want that there is testimony that has never been brought to light, and I will tell you then it is not testimony but some shill's belief. True testimony that can be used as evidence will be put in a transcript---where is yours? You are incorrigible, as in hopeless, in your ability to understand that what you say you believe will not be accepted as evidence. Keep talking, General Partin---I'm sure there have to be other fringers somewhere for you.
