For a good using dog they should be kenneled until you need them. Instinct tells them to herd and when it's not needed it's a problem. Besides why would you want your good cow dog on the loose to get run overm ect. They will also be ready to go to work when you need them and not played out from traipsing around the country.

well i've always had border collies and aussies, they kinda keep an eye on the place and help pen whatever i'm needing at the time. never kept a dog that killed chickens or wouldn't stay in the yard. maybe these dogs aren't very good farm dogs

We had a dog that killed chicken's. I can't say as I blame her I was'nt real fond of them either. My wife likes chickens and wanted me to do something when we were down to six left. I told her to wait a week by then the chickens were gone and the dog had a new hobby killing pocket gophers.

I think chicken killers and cat chasers come in every breed. Train it properly and if it has the instinct to work you should be fine.

Sounds as if you need training along with the dog.....and it's not a smart azz remark either.

How can your dog understand you if you don't even know what you're doing? Not hard to find a good trainer to help you and the dog along...

In my experience any young dog of any working breed that has a real strong desire to work stock(which is what you want) can not and should not be left unattended to do as it pleases when you can,t be with it. If the young dog isn't with you it should be in the kennel or in the porch or in the shop or it will soon discover that it can work at what ever it wants whenever it wants and however it wants which leaves you as an inconvenience as opposed to the leader. The mistake often made is to kennel a dog as punishment after it has been allowed to get into trouble. The kennel or the shop or whatever should be a place the dog willingly goes into to eat and rest. It should never be a place of punishment. In addition to this you as the leader will be the one taking the dog to the stock not the other way around. They are your stock and the dog is working for you.

That's Boarder Collies for you - That and Yapping all the time if you don't let the out if you working other dogs.

At the home place I would let the sheep out in the Alfalfa (30 Acres) in the Late Fall - My dogs ALL knew the "Property Lines" I could leave one on the Porch - I the sheep got to close to a PL they would Center Field Them.

My Dogs were by my side 24/7 so they could work if Need-be!

24/7 - We did not have kids around for many years before V_Key - When we brought her home as a baby, my Dog 'Melody' (on her own) stopped sleeping on the floor at my side and started sleeping under V_Key's Bassinet.
But my dogs are Aussie's - - Old Line Aussie's - -
