I lost my 14 1/2 year old black and white cat "Max" about 3 weeks ago. He was the best natured cat ever. He was my talking cat, always talking to me. He liked to sit near by on a chair and listen when I would play the guitar and sing. He seemed to especially like it when I sang "When you and I were young Maggie" substituting "Max" for Maggie.
He came to work with me as usual on the 28th of August, and was ready to go home in the evening. Later that night about 10:30 I was going to get ready to go to bed when he came and said he wanted to be held. I always told him he should learn English, but I did get to understand most everything he said anyway. So, I sat down and turned on the TV and he laid stretched out on my lap for about 20 minutes, then got down. Later, he wanted something to eat, and the other cats also came when he called for food. So I fed him, then went to bed.
In the morning I fed the cats when I got up, but Max was not there. But that was not unusual, as he was a good hunter, and would be outside hunting. So as I often do I opened the back door and called for him, but he never came. I went out and looked for him but never found him.
Two days later I found my white and yellow cat dead in the back yard, apparently mauled by a dog. It did not happen there, but probably the cat got away and came home before it died. There was some evidence there that there was human involvement.
This yellow and white cat was my alarm clock, always waking me in the mornings.
A week later someone had said that there was a dead black and white cat about a block and a half away that weekend. Max never went farther than 1/2 block from home.
No dog has died from this incident yet, but I keep my model 514 Remington handy.
I miss Max, the house is quiet without him. The other cats are not very vocal. A younger black & white cat that always hung around Max was awful quiet after that, and I never seen much of her. Just yesterday, she started to follow me to work and wants to be held a lot.

So sorry to hear you lost your cat, Martin, and to lose it that way
has to be hard.

We have been gone from home for quite awhile and we left our Magoo
cat at home, with several people taking care of him. He likes to be in
the house...for only awhile...and then he wants out...so we left him
outside and our friends go and put him in for a day...but it's still a
worry that he is okay. You get so attached to them, they are part of
your family.

Maybe the little black and white you mentioned will help make you feel
better. Sounds like she might be trying her best.

I believe that I have identified the dog. I had evidence that it was a shorthaired black dog. Located one not far away, barking at everything that went by within his sight, and running back and forth in a front yard, as if wanting out. Could have jumped the fence if he wanted to, as it was not a tall fence. The gate was padlocked, as if he had gotten out there sometime, and was now secured.
The dog was probably only here about three weeks, and is now gone. (I hope dead). No I didn't shoot it.
It makes you wonder why someone would bring such a ill trained dog into town. Their brains must have been on vacation.

Pets are more than "just animals"
I too had a talking cat and when I moved to Texline she went out and never came back. The white cat I had has now turned into the talking cat who only wants to curl up on me.
I am sure the little one will take over as your talking cat. I know you will always miss Max. Sending prayers of comfort.

I am so sorry about your beloved Max , he sounds like he was a great friend with quite the personality .

The Kit Kat got tangled up with a coyote a last spring, we were lucky that he survived. The coyote must have been scalped by my polydactyl cat because his paws were all bloody and full of hair, not his though.

It is aweful to lose a pet ,but even harder on one to such a tragic way.

Katrina...I'm so sorry about losing your dog.

Magoo was fine when we got home. I did worry about him tho.
Darn animals, sure worm their way into your heart. But life wouldn't
be the same without them. I just wish they lived longer...

Debbie and I were discussing this awhile back.

Do animals have a much shorter life span so that we are blessed to become attached to more of them in our lifetime or so they don't have to put up with us for too long?

So sorry about you losing Max, Clarence. We sure do get attached to our pets so it's awfully hard to lose them.

I guess I was luck to have Max as long as I did. When he was 6 1/2 years old he came down with feline leukemia virus. After an amazing quick recovery after a short treatment, he had never had a sick day for the next 8 years. I was told he would probably keep getting sick again.
After that he started following me to work (Just a short distance down the alley). He got to where he would sit on my lap while I got the computer started, then when Norman would come in and sit at the other desk he would jump down, go over there and meow until Norman told him he could get on the desk, then was happy as long as Norman kept his hand on Max's back.
Although he had lost his teeth 2 years ago, he still hunted, and I would find dead mice by my back step that he brought back.
The bar across the alley told the pest control man that he didn't need any traps set as I had cats and he never was bothered by mice.
