Seein' as how we got some new poems today, I thot' I'd throw this one in. After visitin' with Saddle Tramp, I got to thinkin' and this is what I come up with. Still a little rough and I ain't sure that all will get the message, but what the heck. If it ain't too good, somebody on here will sure tell me!

Scratchin’ the itch

They was sittin’ around a cooler
at the end of a hot spring day
three men in hats and chaps
just washin’ the dust away

The rest of the crew had headed out
after the work had all been done
these three were the last to leave
just watchin’ the settin’ sun

All were thinkin quiet thoughts
about this life that they lead
each in his own reverie
nuthin’ much was bein’ said

One was a younger cowboy
a good hand by all acclaim
friendly and handy at this work
most everyone knew his name

His thoughts were of a little ranch
a small spread all his own
instead of workin’ for the big guys
he’d be a king on his own throne

Another feller was some older
but still young enough to dream
he wished he had a bigger spread
wanted to trade the milk for the cream

He had a nice ranch, tho’ smaller
a wife and two great kids
but he hungered for more in this life
like his neighbor settin’ here did

The third man had a big ranch
the boss of that first cowboy there
the small rancher was just helpin’ em’ out
proud to do his fair share

The big rancher was the oldest one
he thought of years gone by
when he was a small, struggling rancher
when all his dreams were pie in the sky

True he had lots of power now
his crew all did as he bid
but bein’ the boss brought lots of pressure
like a boiling kettle with a tight lid

And true he finally had it all
cows, land and a crew to match
but he wished he was still just a cowboy
with just an itch to scratch

Very good, Jinglebob. When I worked on a dude ranch in 1970, the thought occurred to me then that as a young wrangler on the crew, my life was way more fun than that of the owners. They had all the hassle of ownership, management, and making sure things worked. All I had to do was wear my Stetson at a jaunty angle, tuck my pants into my boot-tops, gaze at the pretty girls, and jingle my spurs as I rode through the sagebrush. Ah, but life was good. Wink Smile

Lots of the world's wealth would be traded for youth, health and physical vigor if it could be.

Now Jinglebob, what were you doing,
When you composed all those lines?
Were you cleaning the corral?
Or clearing brush and vines?

Were you pullin twine
Off hard-frozen bales
Or herding old cows
Moving slow as snails.

Were you rebuilding fence
Breaking in a new mount?
Or just thinkin of pushing pencil
On that quicken account? Smile

I wasn't cleaning corrals and we don't have much brush and vines
I ain't fed enough hay this winter to have to yank twine
My cows can be heard fine, they ain't really that old
I can't afford to build fence, I ain't got any gold
Jr Jingles rides the colts so I don't have to do that
I guess I was just settin' here wonderin', why I'm gettin' fat!

Shall, we do some more nr? Wink
