We tend to like mixed breeds for working dogs.
One dog we have now is a Aussie/Blue Heeler mix and he is a big, not overly bright, but a very nice dog. I think he looks a bit like a Rottweiler and I tell Mr. FH that dog is a 'junkyard dog.' Makes him a little bit irritated...AT ME.
We have gotten along with Blue Heeler crosses real well. We have had both mix and purebred blue heelers. One was an English Shepherd, Blue Heeler mix, she was a really smart and good dog. We had a Catahoula Blue Heeler mix and she was a riot. Not very big, so Mr. FH said she was Chichaua-blue heeler mix. She had more personality than 10 dogs. And really, really tough. Then we got these dogs from Birrers in SW Montana and the first one was the best dog we ever had. That is where we got Dixie, and she's a neat dog and she wants to be with you and help, but she lacks some courage. She is just a year old, so maybe she will get better. If the male dog was more interested in working, that would help. He's big enough to bring a cow down, but chicken hearted for the most part.

| I have gone the gammet with dogs, I like dogs, they have done wonderous things for me and also made alot of wrecks. I have had Blue Heelers, loved them in the brush, they are tough, some dog hating cow comes after them they will win. Border collies are too hyper for me sometimes, the neighbors have three that make it almost impossible to do anything, brand inspect, brand, work cows, they are out of control cause they need work. I have never had an aussie but have been around alot of them, the cross may be great dogs, a mixture of the good points with training. One of the best cow dogs I ever saw was, if you can believe this, a poodle. Lived and breathed with the owner and was as smart as they come. The best dog I ever had in the pasture was an English Shepherd/Blue Heeler, he had the heart of a heeler but more under control like the Shepherds. The Corgies so far are the most in the corral, they just can't cover the ground. I have a friend with a heeler/corgie, still can't cover the country but better than a straight heeler. WOOF

Just an update, I think the dog is in labor!!!....but with the men outside AI'ing cattle and all the whistling the poor dog doesnt know which way to go. She thinks she needs to be out there helping them, but its obvious that she just plain doesnt feel well. She keeps looking at me for help..lol
Thanks to all for the replies, sounds like alot of you like the aussie/heeler breed as much as I do!!!

NOOO, no puppies yet, she just wont settle down long enough to let things happen. They finished up AI'ing cattle yesterday, so I am hoping now that things can get back to her normal routine that she might just let it happen today..or I will have to call the VET. I am not real sure how long to let her go, today is day 65 of gestation...anyone experienced in birthing pups?...Its gotta be different than cows..lol...for the most part I would think.
I will TRY to post pictures as soon as they are born, but this silly site for some reason isnt allowing me to post any.

| WE HAVE BABIES!!! 7 SO FAR!!! UT OHHH...MAKE THAT 8 !!! anyway, she labored all day, finally FarmDogDaddy and I decided it was time to have her checked by the vet as we didnt feel she was progressing and didnt want to much stress on either mom or the babies (mostly stress on me) the vet said she was fully dialated but not pushing so gave her oxytocin and within a few hours she was having babies. 2 solid black with white collars, 5 black and white spotted (merle) and one that I am not sure what to call, but it looks alot like a rat!!!

Ya can't ride the papers, but they sure help you esll a horse - even a gelding.
My old border collie turns 18 in 4 months - yeah we were both young once, but its hard to remember. I bought Suz as an unregistered color cropout (she's mostly white) from jim Roberson at Higgins Tx for a frankie. I didn't care about the sheets, but you must have the breeding.
I've been bid obscene amouunts, well $2000 and $3000 for Suz, but wouldn't think of it. One persistant Angus Breeder kept after me, so I had to explain that Suz is family and any offers after the first one is inconsiderate. Some of my friends have asked for a pup which led me to 6 planned matings. I gave every pup to decent people - no horse beaters - with the understanding that I'd help train them, use them with Suz, and take them back if they weren't working out. Perhaps mostly owing to my judge of character, the pups are all jamb up dogs.
Now when ol Suz was a sprightly 16, we had an English Shepard show up. I couldn't pet him, but he was always arround. He was sooo smart, he'd sit and watch my kids from a hill just beyond the yard. If anyone or anything showed up, that dog was on the prod. As luck would have it, my 16 year old border collie got pregnant and had 2 pups. I kept the male and gave the female to a good friend that raises phesants and needed a dog to load out birds. My pup is working pretty well - he wouldn't make a pimple on my old dog yet - and he is very very protective. A local drifter stopped by the house when I was in the hospital "to see if my wife needed any help" and Bucky drug him by the leg out of the house. Later my boy confided in me that he'd hissed real low so that only the dog would hear it, but his momma wouldn't. I told Clayton Wyatt that we'd need to work on commands so we could get Bucky to latch onto the throat rather than the leg.
As for papers, you'll usually have papers if the breeding is solid, but in my dog's case not so. Its the breeding, not the papers. the border collie breed has gotten so popular that many people are raising pups and pretending that AKC means something.
