Iowa Horse Numbers Climb
The Des Moines Register recently reported that horses are seeing a resurgence in Iowa as acreage owners, rural entrepreneurs and horse-racing enthusiasts increase their herds. According to the U.S. Census of Agriculture, 11,482 Iowa farms had horses and ponies in 2002, up more than 10% from the 1992 total. The growth in horse numbers, however, is even more dramatic: Iowa's horse population totaled 77,123 animals in 2002, up 42% from the 1992 figure. The paper quoted several sources that noted the increase in horse numbers is good for the state's economy and for those who supply equine feed.
