| One thing that works pretty good to keep a horse in the gait you want requires an arena, corrall or round pen of sorts. Ride the horse along the fence in the gait you want, when they change turn them in the opposite direction by turning them towards the fence. I think it's important when you make the turn to use the inside rein. Holding both reins in one hand, slowly slide your hand down the inside rein a ways then take hold and slowly and gently start the turn. The split second the horse has committed to the turn drop the rein and let the horse finish the turn itself, and carry on down the fence in the gait you wanted until he changes gait again. If you stick with this they will stay in gait and get a pretty nice start on a roll back as well.

| I'm not a barrel rider but I have seen this type of issue with other horses and this is what I have used to fix em. Since your thinking he is doing this because " he wants to run em not go slower" I would work on not giving him what he wants...you said that she takes him aside and works him hard for a bit...I would stop that. If he is wanting to really go then working him "hard" is only giving him what he wants even if it's not "running the pattern" I could not watch the video( to slow of a connection on my end) but if he gives any warning before he leaps I would use it as my cue to shut him down if there is little to no warning as soon as he started his leap I would be on the brakes, stop him dead right there and make him stand for a min or two. Then let him go off at the pace she sets and that pace only! He will soon learn that if I leap because I want to run em I get shut down and can't walk let alone run em! I also second the idea of mixing up and pattern and/or working him with/om the barrels just not in the "pattern" Set them up in a str8 line going down the line make him circle each one to the left then flip around and bring him back down the line but circle him to the right. If she wants to work him "hard" when he leaps work his brain not his butt...lol make him back a few steps, sidepass, turns on the forehand and haunches,etc....anything that is low speed yet makes him think...he loves to run so giving him any speed will only make him want it more. I believe that no matter what a horse is trained for/in it should always listen to the rider. if i want to go at a walk then by darn it we ARE going to walk. I think part of it is just him disrespecting her, he doesn't think he has to listen...change the tude and the horse will change. She should never "just let him run" because HE wants to....she is the rider he should do what SHE wants. Just my two cents, Good Luck with him!

Still givin Tank time for his mouth to heal up.
But good news. Cash the horse that went to the vet for the head slingin issue, and has TMJ, treated for that and adjusted once again, ran a 15.505 saturday. That's his fastest time ever in that pen. He did do a small amount of head movement on the first barrel. But not like he's been doin. (could be he's still expecting pain and that'll take time for him to figure out it's not hurtin) No head slingin on 2nd and 3rd. So we are real pleased with that.
Toilet Paper ran a 15.641 and pulled a check for $194 woo hoo!!!

Faster horses....it amazes me how she takes care of it all. She's not just runnin 3. Yes 3 horses. But....
2pm the Open starts. She makes sure that her runs are far apart enuff that she has time to saddle and warm up each horse. When all three go, she will Saddle TP and run him first. Then run Cash. Then she usually runs again in the Youth. So she'll run Cash, and then TP. Runs are far apart enuff time wise for them to have plenty rest time. Then she's been runnin Tank in the Youth also.....and then again in the Novice. She won't ever run any of them more than twice per barrel race. So sometimes in one day she's makin 6 runs. She does all her own saddling, all her own gettin the horses back there. Sometimes she has them standin in pens instead of makin trips back and forth to the trailer. NBHA requires a rider, or a member of the family to work so many shows, and get so many work points. So I do that part of it for her. If she has a big stretch between horses she sometimes steps in and volunteers to work as a barrel setter. It takes all the one's at the barrel race to get involved in the working for it to run smooth.

Yes ranchhand. She works all kinda different patterns on the barrels slow workin. Even set up poles and barrels in random patterns. She doesn't run them at home but maybe one or two times a week. The rest is slow work, and then she'll take them off out ridin thru the woods, side passing, stopping, backin up. etc.
This horse tho, he's bein different that's for sure.
Faster horses, we didn't know Cash had TMJ till we took him into this new vet 3 weeks ago. I had read about it, and wondered if that's what it could be, then was lucky enuff to find this vet that specializes in stuff like that. It's kinda cool. Cuz havin been a dental assistant for so long, and making the night guards for people with TMJ, and all the stuff that goes with it, was very interesting. I think I woulda dearly loved bein an equine dentist. If I'da just knew that twenty years ago!

I'm sure Lil Lilly does her part and more! And I didn't mean to imply that she would over ride one of her horses. What I meant was, each horse has it's own style and probably is ridden differently. It would be hard
to ride three and remember what each one needs help with.
