The day started out fair,me and elmo were sittin on the front porch, was afternoon so we were sippin blended whiskey, elmo said well here comes doc you can hear him coming way before you see him that truck of his needed a muffler for years anyway he had my old cowbdogs barkin at the yard gate when he pulled up in that rattle trap he calls a pickup, why'n hale you dont control those mongrels is beyond me sez ole doc, plain to see the ole buzzard was already drunk.
Howdy doc I said how are you ? Late he replied are we gonna play moon or stand around listenin to these mongrels ? well lets go young man I said as we all headed to town.
Course elmo has to sit by the window, always has that red man in his jaw and while I like to ride shotgun I learnt the hard way you dont want an ole geezer leanin over you to spit out the window especially one thats been drinkin.

I like to tease ole doc and he has a good sense of humor when he is drinkin, catch him sober and he is all buisness, was a pretty good country doctor in his time but ole doc is old now pushin 80 hard and spends most of his time fishin huntin or playin dominoes mostly moon or...............................to be continued

PS I got a few chores to finish be back this evening
good luck

The rest of the story............................

arguin about the old days,Doc's kin like mine, come from Louisianna they Came to Texas bent on avenging the death of a brother and cousin who’d been massacred at Goliad by Santa Ana’s army, but by the time they got here the Revolution was won and Texas was a Republic. They might’ve gone home then, but found Texas was a hunter’s paradise, so they made there way to the Hill country Comfort TX where they hunted and settled.

Some of those old stories have alot in common with what went on in the not too distant past, like the time we were camped out along the Rio Grande woke up bout midnite by meskin talk seems like a few meskins would wait for a good moon lit nite then run a dozen or so of our stockers across the river at the shallows.
only this time we were cold camping tryin to catch em.

"manos arriba malditos ladrones" elmo hollered as he fired in the air, that spooked the horses/cattle and meskins never seen such a mess somehow between spooked horses terrified meskins runnin for the south side of the Rio Grande and stampeding steers nobody got hurt and never lost another steer on that ranch to meskin rustlers, found 3 meskin straw hats and a meskin sandal at daybreak.

anyway back to the Saturday and the moon game I hafta watch these ole geezers real close when we play moon some of them will "brothernlaw" you if they can,you moon players know what Inm talkin about.
So we made the short trip to town its only about 12 miles and as usual the place was full, mostly cowboys/ranch hands and a few bleached blondes.

The evening was mostly uneventful, one ole hawkeyed hussie was tryin to strike up some talk with me,same old line......"MY what a good lookin hat you wear cowboy" and as the juke box wailed honky tonk tunes I came close to waltzin jole blon, but Im not interested in female talk tonite me and old doc, elmo are moon players and I gotta make sure i aint gettin "brotherinlawed"
So that was my saturday,my apologies to anyone that got their feelins hurt in this thread, especially the ladies as they are truly Gods greatest creation and the ladies fasterhorses and MsSage are special as are all the Ladies that frequent ranchers.net

good luck

Thanks for the story. You do a fine job story-telling!
I always enjoy them. Only problem is, they are too far apart... Wink
