Any predictions on calf prices this fall? With declining cow numbers and higher slaughter prices for cows & lots of feed available, what is the smart play with the calf crop? Steers? Heifers? Keep, hold or sell? Say what?

We have backgrounded our calves for the spring market the last two years. Both years paid well.

This year feed is short in BC and calves are or will be the best value they have been since '00 and '01. We are going to take the profit while it is there and sell the majority of them off the cow.

I do know that when they are worth as much as they are now you should be feeding them for every pound they will put on in as short time as possible.

The Farmer's Creed.....

Wheat is down to a dollar,
I shoulda sold it last fall,
Calves are over a dollar,
Think I'll hang onto them all. Wink

Not sure what the prices will be, but our yearling steers aren't set to be moved for at least three weeks yet, and we've got three different buyers asking about them already.

That can only be a good thing. Very Happy
