After eight hours of seemingly endless debate, the Senate Judiciary Committee wrapped up an immigration reform bill on Monday evening that addresses the concerns of many illegal immigrants., ...

Kennedy, who crafted much of the legislation with Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., won approval on an 11-5 vote for a five-year program to permit as many as 1.5 million agriculture workers into the country. They will be allowed to seek permanent legal residence.,...
While the panel was able to wrap its legislative arms around a guest worker program that clears a path to citizenship for the 11 million illegals now believed to be in the country,...
"If the bottom line is that all of the people who came here illegally have got to be made citizens, then we may as well have the vote right now. You all may have the votes to pass that, but it will never become law. I'll vote against it, that's amnesty, that's not going to work," Kyl said.
The United States "should not have to choose between being a welcoming society and being a lawful society" when dealing with illegal immigration. |
am I the only one baffled by this?

I don't know.
It has nothing to do with offending or not offending the illegal aliens who are protesting, though.
It's because I, like a great many leaders far wiser than I, really don't know what the realistic solution is.
Close the borders!
Oh sure. Easy to say. But the logistics of that are overwhelmingly complex. We've been trying that for years and it's worked oh so well thus far...
Deport the illegals!
Again. Easy to say. We've been trying that one for years, too.
Deny services to illegals!
Okay. If documentation can be good enough to fool employers, how is it not going to slip by an overworked government employee at HHS? (And any children born in this country are citizens, regardless of how their parents got here).
But on the other hand, granting citizenship is like crying, "uncle." I'm not seeing how that's the answer, either.

I voted YES. I support illegals becoming citizens, but only, IF and WHEN they go through the proper procedures. I agree that deporting them would be easier said than done, but I don't think it is impossible.
As for closing the border, in my opinion that would be EASY. Put our military down there with tanks and guns. Not there for show either but put them there and mean business. The illegals aren't carring guns, to my knowledge, so it should be easy and loss the of military lives shouldn't be a big concern.
As many of you probably already know these people are very hard workers but they need to be here legally. Just my thoughts on it.

| I'm thinking it would be cheaper to invade Mexico than what it would cost to enforce the border with fences, Army, guards, etc.

How thoroughly our government enforces the border.
A few years back, my son was leading a Marine engineering unit rebuilding the border road near Candelaria, TX. The Rio Grand river had shifted course and washed out the road used to patrol the border.
Due to a border incident a few months earlier when a Marine shot and killed a Mexican kid who had poingted a rife at the Marine, my son's unit were not allowed to have weapons!!!
They had a lot of construction equipment there and it was in a non-secured area. When I asked what it was like to guard equipment without weapons, I was informed that the equipment (costing several millions of dollars) was left unguarded for that reason.
Also, the new road was about 1/4 mile inside the US border. They had to take the new road over a 100 foot cliff. They were using a rock drill and a bulldozer to chip away at the cliff and push the rabble into the canyon.
I asked why they didn't use explosives. They were not allowed to use any explosives anywhere hear the Mexican border even though it would have saved a lot of money and cut the time by over half.
I know this sounds ridiculous, but I was on site and had a hard time understanding it.
I also saw caves and other hiding places where the illegals hid water bottles for use on their way north. Border patrol was sure beating a dead horse there.
That is pretty rough country there. Pancho Villa's hideout was about a mile across the Rio Grande river and plainly visible.
Should we ever have another war with Mexico and win it, They should have to take that part of Texas back!!

| here is a novel idea.why no bring america to mexico?why not pay americains to start up self sufficant lifestyles and companies that employ mexicans,in mexico.....offer ranchers lucritive oppertunitys to run ranches there and still keep their own running by bring mexicans up to help their american ranch..teaching them on both sides of the border....do this with trades and technical jobs and offer incentives to have american companies move up to 20% of there companies to mexico.make it pofitable and maybe an north american like infrastructure would be created over time....instead of making home look bad,why not try making home look good ,and maybe illegals will be a thing of the past

Mexico, just like New Orleans, will be in trouble until the people are willing to fight off all of those who use graft and coruption, to make more money than anyone else. Like the people who run the government and businesses.
In Mexico, it is an accepted fact of life. I believe it is called "mordida".
