    Chosen- a cowboy poem

I was thinking a day or so ago about why I’m who I am. And this poem was born. Thought some of y’all might hear what I am saying Chosen This life chose me, Long before I was even born. When the first cowboy saddled his horse, On an early Texas morn. Just one act was destiny, For folks like...

    Let’s see your Christmas trees

We got out and got our tree cut. It’s a pinion pine and Angie got it all decorated. Ya know we’re rednecks when the ornaments are red ear tags. Let’s see what y’all have for trees.

    Utah Cattlemen’s Association call

The phone rang and it was a board member from the UCA. Informed me I was nominated for the state board. So now I have a nominating committee meeting Wednesday in SLC at the winter convention. Elections happen Friday. I’m hoping they vote in someone better qualified and more politically inclined...

    Weaned and worked the tailenders

Weaned my calves later than normal. Just the way life worked out with timing. Little bunch of my steers averaged 685 and heifers went 760. Anomaly with birth dates as heifers were all born first. One steer weighed in at 820. No creep and just our range. Amazing what happens with a great snow...

    Dalton thumps a good buck

Dalton is my son. A lot of y’all have watched him grow up as littlest H on here. Two weeks ago he killed a good buck with his muzzleloader. Super proud of him. We hunted our guts out and we had a blast together. Took us til 11:45 to get back into camp that night.

    Wrote a poem sunday

I’ve got some good friends who have surely been struggling with grief. My own opinion has drastically changed about dealing with it as I’ve aged. And my concern for my friends dealing with the loss of kids or a spouse got me to thinking. And when I think i usually write. And so here is what I’ll...

    Stack yard full

Stack yard sonnet My stack yard's full And so's my heart. Thanks don't seem enough, But it's where I'll start. Because you sent the snow, And you sent the rain, To renew my hope, And ease my pain. Years of drought We struggled through. And once or twice, I wondered if you knew. How...

    This afternoon on the desert

Sunday was a fine day. We had a church meeting over to Tooele and it was a spiritual feast. Really enjoyed it even though I’m not a fan of town. This afternoon we walked through the cows and took a jaunt down to a leased pasture we are resting this spring and summer. May use it this fall. Took...

    Song about this challenging winter/spring

I got an idea after visiting with so many ranchers throughout the west who are having a heck of a time this year. So, I did what I do, I wrote. I had a very crude and rough draft of a song. So I sent it to a friend who is amazing young man and a talented singer/song writer. Kaden Miner crafted...

    Walden Colorado poetry trip.

Had a blast!!! Amazing cattle country. Lots and lots of snow though. Which isn’t a surprise at 8800 feet. Gotta go back in summer time and see it again. Met some wonderful people who are ranchers and understand the things that happen and are happening in agriculture. Boy are they fed up with the...

Giving back My daughter and her husband are up at the Green Jacket ranch today. They are both ranch raised kids and love being outdoors around livestock. So no surprise right? Or maybe not. Our neighbors are Alan and Liz Mitchell and they run a cow/calf operation and direct market beef to...

Cowboy poetry I wrote in February

I’ve had several experiences when I’m on our mountain where I’m sure I had company with me. Call me crazy and you’d probably not be wrong, but it’s happened. So I wrote this one to try and describe what I’ve felt. It’s called……. Holy This land, it speaks. It speaks Directly to my heart. From...

    Bought a bull

We went over to Heber City last evening and attended a bull sale. Had a fine evening and I even convinced my sweet wife it counted as date night since we got supper and entertainment. Ended up buying a Simm/Angus bull from an outfit over on Eastern Utah in Altamont. I really like him. No...

Was going through some old pictures and found this one from when Angie and I did our wedding announcements. The old cabin behind us is at the ranch and was built in 1871.

Sunshine on a windy, bitter February day

Sunshine The old sun comes up, And then goes down. But while it's here, Its light abounds! Summer's heat Or winter's snow. In the calm of fall, Or a spring time blow. It brings us warmth, It gives us light. It gently chases, Away the night. It spends the day, High in the sky. East to...
