    What would you do???????

I bought a 1/2 section of grass this summer. We closed on it the middle of Sept. I take possession Nov.1. The grass is rented out and I was told from the beginning the renter would be out Oct 15. There were 32 pairs on this grass for the summer. I checked on it today and found that the cows...

    anybody having pinkeye problems?

Besides me? Wow. Everything was given an autogenous pinkeye shot, Long Range wormer shot and a fly tag but none of that seems to mean much right now. Sure appreciate my dart rifle but the calves not so much. Even the older cows can't fight this off.

    Dart gun question

I have a PneuDart rifle. Not Co2 but the pump style. I darted a 250lb calf with pink eye the other day and discovered the dart never discharged the Draxxin I loaded in it. Any ideas on what I did wrong or if the dart was a dud or whatever? I had to wait for it to fall out of the calf so thought...

    Plumbing question

We are in the process of installing several giant rubber water tanks. Generally the center is filled with cement and the water is turned on. The guy selling these tire tanks has found a company making a big hard plastic 'plug' for these tanks. The selling point is, if you ever want or need to...

    Calving 2016

How's it going for you? I'm finding, this year, that the calves birth weight is following the cow more than the bull. Meaning, if she has some size in her background, the calf tends to be bigger than what I expect from the bull. I am wondering if it's something anyone else is noticing. We didn't...

If the world were perfect, it wouldn’t be....

A rant for tonight.......I had a windmill stop bringing water. We have pulled it before but it's getting hard to climb towers since the 41st anniversary of my 21st birthday wasn't too long ago. Anyway, I called a water well service and waited 10 days for their arrival. The leathers in the...

    Bull Lease

If you leased a bull, what would/should it cost? I know about the trich test (before and after) and necessary vaccinations, etc. Had a neighbor ask about leasing one of my bulls. He has a small fall calving herd. I'm not-at this time-worried about loss of the bull but know it's part of the risk...

    Prayers for Alison

Some years back, Brian Simon from South Dakota posted on Ranchers. I don't know what name he posted under. His daughter, Alison, has had some tough health issues which required a kidney transplant. He asked for prayers for her here on Ranchers. There were updates on CaringBridge.com. A few days...

Anybody ever have 'em? I've got two. One was 835lbs. He went to town last week with a group. He was cut out and sold as a single. Have another one that's probably 675lbs. Drilling a dry hole

I'm in the process of drilling a new water well in a pasture. Or I was. The driller located a "good" spot and drilled down 85 feet. We had a dry hole. So, he located another "good" spot and drilled again. This time he went down 125 feet to find another dry hole. He presented me with the bill...

    What are the odds?

New Years day I found an aborted baby calf. So much for a good start to 2015. Cows will start calving the end of Feb. This calf was a heifer and weighed about 15lbs. I brought the cow in to sell but she is still full on both sides. There was a small afterbirth, not the size usually seen at a...

    question for Loomixguy

About 4 years ago we used Loomix on several pens of calves. The kid selling the product drifted on to something else. 2 red tubs were left here. His distributorship was picked up by another kid who didn't last long. Today, that kid stopped here to pick up a couple cows and claimed the tubs were...

    A few observations

Our spring rains are a month to 6-weeks late. I moved my replacement heifers because they were running out of grass. Now, ponds are full and running over, spring grass is coming. Musk thistles are showing about a month later than normal and they are coinciding with snakeroot which usually...
