    You can't save them all

The rest of my year didn't go a whole lot better.. Lost another cow in the summer to what I'm chalking up to be Lyme disease... Oh I got better than 100% calf crop at the expense of cows... Hopefully I've had my share this for a while.

    You can't save them all

That one was certainly determined to die.. unfortunate.. I lost 1 calf in the last 6 years, C section that took FOREVER for the vet to get here.. timely arrival would have certainly been a different outcome.. Lost a cow 6 weeks ago.. had to be my best cow of course.. still pizzed about it.

I was about to mention Kosher.. We looked into it 20 years ago, and in fact it's pretty much just added ritual, and for as much as we cared, meant nothing about how the animal was raised, only the slaughter mattered.

    Stupid,stupid, stupid heifers

Soap, you're totally right about stopping, having a smoke or coffee, and letting the dust settle when things aren't working. I often work my cows alone because I have far more control over the 'flow' of things. At weaning time I can usually separate them all out in 20 minutes myself (25 pairs)...

I have 2 left to go (they're pretty close), 12 heifers and 9 steers so far.. I have an entire cow 'family' that had ONLY heifers this year (7 out of 7).. It's a good family, and I think 4 of them are going into the replacement pen Really TAME calves this year, all of them are sucks for attention.

    Stupid,stupid, stupid heifers

I have stupid old cows as often as stupid heifers... They're of course the ones that turn into stupid old cows if they just raise calves I have to have and haven't found smarter ones to replace them with

The C section heifer I had this year wasn't fat, it was just a darned big calf (and there's no history of big calves in that maternal or paternal line) I have other big cows that routinely make huge calves, no matter what they're bred to, and my climate is far warmer than Silver's... We had a...

It's been a heifer year for me too.. I'm at 11 heifers and 8 bulls.. thankfully a lot of my best cows have been the ones with heifers, and I have a cull list for fall 2017. Around here it's been unseasonably warm for a long time.. I don't think we have had a frost since Feb sometime.. Apples...

If only we knew what the next year's weather was going to be like before we turned the bulls out right?. I can't complain about the weather yet.. it's gorgeous out, into the 80s in the day... but if this keeps up all summer I might change my tune.. don't want another scorcher like last year...

Well.. I think it starts off with "I'm gonna lose this cow and calf".. I got nothing to lose by trying to save one of the two.. anyone got a knife?.. Might have to figure out the needle and stitches later, but if you get the calf out alive, you're already ahead. I would like to have some good...

I just had to get the first C section performed here on Monday... Vet is 2 hours away, so the calf was gone by the time he got here.. First timer with a 110 lb heifer calf.. I could tell pulling harder wasn't going to get me anywhere so I bit the bullet and called him in.. $1000 bucks later...

    Red Color Probability

I did keep a bull out of one of those cows.. She had 2 steers, they were beauties, then 2 heifers that I kept, then 3 bulls in a row, I kept them all intact, The first I sold to a neighbor (meat price), and he didn't pass BSE in the spring due to a crooked/broken penis, which was really...

Just like those great commercial cows you want heifers from.. keep making bull calves, and the cows that are sub-par and you don't consider anything from.. well.. they'll keep making heifers.

    Wheat going into Canada

We are an honorable member of the 3rd world.. it's something I heard a long time ago and it'd darned true. Yes we have shiney new cell phones and gizmos, but when you get right down to it.. we're a resource based economy with a spineless gov't that does what big brother tells it to do

I'm finding moderate birthweights this year.. though they're still higher than what most people think is normal. Heifers have all been 80ish lbs except for one at about 100-110 (SUPER strong and vigorous that one was).. Bull calves have been around 90-110. Haven't had any problems so far.. hope...
