Hey - what do you mean "that cost me"? I'm curious.
We finally found a place a ways from here that mixes the mineral according to our local soil deficiencies (don't know brand - I'll have to ask hubby). It's a pain to get it, but I hope it's worth it. We just put it out.....and the cows...
Hey George - do you have a pixture of this concrete feeding area? We're thinking of trying to do something like that with concrete, and we'd love some ideas!
These pictures are great. We've got such a small operation here that our "drives" from one field to the next only require a bucket.
How neat to see a big cattle herd moving across open spaces!
Thanks for sharing.
Our Angus Mix cattle get reddish backs in the winter time. We've heard that this is a copper deficiency. We are trying to find better quality mineral, but it's really hard around here.
Does anyone else have experience with the red backs and how to "fix" it?
Hey Everyone:
Preliminary reports have come in on our dead calf. Initial diagnoses are peritinitis and plueritis (not sure if I'm spelling those right). Basically, it's inflammation of the lining of the lungs (I'm told). Our vet says it would have been caused by some type of internal trauma...
I sure do appreciate everyone's advice.
We're sitting on pins and needles waiting for the post results.
No matter what they find - we're going to follow everyone's advice on the metal and the pond testing.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and we'll let you all know as soon as the test...
WOW!!!
This morning I was trying to think outside the box about what could be happening - and the two things I thought of were the exact same things you've put on this forum:
1) Alot of calves have been licking and chewing on the old broken up (metal!!) hay feeder. Wondering if that could be...
Well, we didn't get the charolais calf posted.....and 4 days later, another calf has died suddenly (angus mix).
My husband and I each canceled our plans for tonight and spent four hours roundtrip taking this calf to the after-hours place to get posted. Local vets won't do it.
The mood is very...
I'm not saying you have Freemartin just that when buying Heifers I can spot a Freemartin that way - an Old Vet 50 years ago taught me to spot them - - seams like the best looking Heifer might be a Freemartin - - They tend to look a little male and their vulva looks smaller - - it's hard to put...
Hanta Yo:
The only thing this calf was doing was laying around more than normal. He didn't act in distress at all.Maybe I should also add that this calf (for the 6 weeks we had him) was never a ball of fire. He was always very calm, tame, and laid back. All our black calves (Angus and Angus...
Wow - I went to my folks house for dinner and came back to 9 replies! Thanks everyone.
We did think about a post mortem....but it's an hour and a half away.....
We're going to hope this was an isolated incident. We DO have a call into the people we bought the cow/calf from to inquire about...
Hello!
We just found this site. The advice here seems great!
We have a growing cattle operation here in Kentucky, and we've been at it for 9 years. We had a calf up and die on us this weekend and I'd be grateful for any input you might have.
A 5 month charolais calf that we've had about 6...
