Thanks for the advice everyone. My dad AI-ed his cows and heifers for quite a few years by himself so if I get in a jam he will probably be able to help. I was just old enough to do a handful by myself with his supervision and remember struggling for 10 minutes just to watch him take over and...
I am planning on AI-ing my heifers next year but figured I better learn how to do it first. Any advice where to go to AI school at?
Here's some background on my situation. I want to use AI to improve my female breeding stock. I have a commercial black angus herd, some mine and some on share...
I'm looking for a bull to use on my heifers this summer. I got a local breeder's flier that has a bull with good calving ease EPD's. Only thing is, he weighed 50 lbs at birth and is about 100-150lbs lighter than most of the rest of the bulls on the sale. So I asked the hired man over there...
Denny - seems like 220 ac of corn at $5/bu adds up to more than whatever the silage would be worth...why chop it? Sell the calves off the cow and contract or hedge the corn - I don't claim to be a great marketing mind, but others who are say that is the way to go.
I'm building a new corral at my place and am using those slammer latches in 3 or 4 places. Found a couple leftovers from dad's corral, but I can't find any like them. Looked at Runnings and wasn't real impressed with what they had. Has anyone had a slam latch fail them? I forget the brand...
In the beef production classes I've taken at SDSU we were told hefiers should be 65% of their mature body weight at breeding and 85% mature body weight when they have thier first calf.
I use neadsfoot something-or-other, oil or compound but I don't recall which. I like to put it on with an old 2" paintbrush. It goes a lot faster than using a rag and you can get in cracks and such much easier. I usually do it over Christmas break from college - always enjoy those winter jobs...
To do my bibliography, I may need to get your name and hometown and state so I reference the source correctly. Let me know if that's ok, or just PM me. Thanks.
I'm doing a paper about controlling prairie dogs on rangeland. I can't seem to find any data on how fast prairie dog towns can spread. Have any of you had a town spread, or maybe repopulate after poisoning them? How long does it take? My family's operation is on the wrong side of the...
February 10 & 17, '06 April Live Cattle, Chicago Merchantile Exchange. I need the quotes for a marketing class project, so I don't work with a broker. Is there a website or publication where I can get that stuff? Thanks!
Does anyone know where to find options quotes from a month ago? It's real easy to find futures contract prices but I can't seem to find options quotes.
I'm doing a feasibility study for a farm economics class about the feasibility of meat goat production in southeast SD and southwest MN. I come from a cow/calf background and don't know much at all about goat production. Any help is welcome. Thanks.
I think there are different levels of payments, as someone else said, depending on the area and how many other walk-ins there are around. I don't know that it is based on how much the landowner could get. That could vary a lot by the amenities and accomodations offered. As far as where the...
