    Cow ?

Me to. We've done several things because I do travel and can't be there. We choose pretty good weather to calve in. We use great minerals and feed. During report exam on heifers, vet tells us of any tight Pelvic openings. And, we cull everything that is any kind of issue. For the most part...

    Ranching "Rule of Thumb"

    I've said this several times to folks~ Them, "You're done already?" Me, "I needed to be done in a hurry. So, I slowed down".....While thinking, "And I told you to be here an hour late on purpose" ;-}

Chute, There It Goes—by Steve Moreland, April 9, 2017

The best measures of a hand is what they do to keep things from going sideways and what they do when the unexpected pops up and things go sideways

    Endovac

Hi Nicky, I used it last year. It was on the advice of our vet based on eye issues we had had in years prior. I'm not 100 percent certain it didn't help in that we were late getting to some pastures and what we saw could of been partly due to eye injuries from seeds. My hope is to manage better...

    Ranching "Rule of Thumb"

"A $15.00/Hour employee to move wheel lines and hot wire is cheaper than a divorce".... Ok, I made that one on the fly about 5 years ago??? I had a friend that wanted his wife to work more on marketing. She was resisting. I asked why he couldn't and he told me, "I have to move hot wire and wheel...

    How High?

I'm used to 6 rail gates. In your example, we'd slide off the bottom rails as needed?

    Bull sale trends?

I've looked at some of these Bull prices and what we do with our open cows ($1,600 direct market the beef). I've said to myself, I could buy a lot of semen and live with a 70% conception rate"... I never have pulled that trigger though. Perhaps pride gets in my way. I really like having good...

    Bull sale trends?

I think weather really affected some of the early sales

A couple of recent odd calving situations

I've actually heard of this legitimately happening two other times. I'm not so sure it didn't happen to us once. We had a cow that calves (We watched). A month later we were moving them and noticed an extra calf. When they paired up, she was nursing an extra calf (That she raised just fine).

    How High?

I watched the video again. The ideal sorting gate would allow you to choose how many bottom rails to swing out of the way for sorting calves at different times of the year and sizes. So, I am thinking the bottom three rails would be collared independently over the main gate frame. If you showed...

    U.S. Cowherd expanding

I heard the same. Traditionally, Cash Fats have been very strong in April. We kind of set our Fall Calving based on that principle. I'd look at it as a seasonal rise rather than a trend. Do remember what you paid me for that analysis though.

    U.S. Cowherd expanding

Costco in Korea just announced switching from Australian to US Beef. 6% from two years ago is pretty big. We need a little weaker dollar and a lot more exports and it is still a pretty tall order.

    Traveling

Also, I started paying someone to winter a portion of my herd. It seemed like it was spendy up front. However we likely will have them winter all of our mother cows this coming year. After we looked at it, the ones we kept at home likely will cost us more. One thing I have done is source feed...

    Traveling

As a guy who travels, let me tell you two things. Set things up easy. By that, I mean calve on grass, have the vet palpate replacement heifers for Pelvic Size, and don't keep any problem cows. They need to drop a calf and raise it. No excuses. They need to be independent. Do you see a theme...

    Strangest Cattle Feed/Supplement?

Onions will give cattle ulcers. Not sheep though. Cannary/Food Processing waste is a pretty big part of feeding in the Columbia Basin.

    Strangest Cattle Feed/Supplement?

Baghouse screenings from powdered milk factory. Come to me in one ton totes. I am still not certain of the best way to feed. They are really fines and I was mixing with wet frozen vegetable feeds. But, wow! The energy analysis was really high. I have put out free choice loose and it takes a...

    New Here

Hi and welcome Denice, I don't have dogs because I travel and just don't have the time they deserve. But man, I absolutely Love watching good well trained dogs in a variety of disciplines. The talk of using alternative breeds for herding reminded me of a guy who used a Border Collie to hunt...

    Sisal twine

I ran across "Silage Specials" in baling as the West side of our state does a ton of Silage Baling. I was amazed at how fine the cutters cut the hay going into the bale. Seemed to me like it did a better job than anything I had ever seen post baling at cutting up long hay. It would require Net...
