Fuel prices near you- Thanks Biden

I went to the sale in La Grande yesterday. The Flying J which is the closest station to the sale had diesel price post as $5.85 a gallon. That would be nearly $150 to fill up my pickup if it is on a quarter of the tank.. I drove my little car to the sale. 4 or 5 gallons of gas for the car is...

Fuel prices near you- Thanks Biden

Last week on Friday while hauling home cows I stopped at a station if Vale. Cheapest one I had found. Diesel was $4.32. Same station today I filled up for $4.92. Saw a couple other stations on my way home that were well over $5.00. B and I were talking hay cost and freight to move it. He...

    Did anyone watch The American?

Dawson Hay won the saddle broncs. Jesse Brown won the steer wrestling. He is a local boy. His parents have a tire store in Baker City. I watched all of the final four. Missed the round of ten. Watched some of the earlier stuff.

    And it begins

About two weeks ago one of my fine one and done cows prolapsed. There is a reason these old girls are at the sale. You could see the scars on her where she had been sewed up before. She hadn't calved yet so we had to pin her together. Well this morning there is a chunky looking Char cross...

    And it begins

That picture was as close as I got this morning. About noon I decided to go get a couple bales for the stocker calves. As I drove by the motley crew I glanced in there. There is a new calf!!! Wait there are two calves. I just bought these girls on Wednesday. Now we are trying to figure out...

    And it begins

The motley crew waiting to go through the chute early this afternoon. That spotted Simme cow was the only one I got bought at a bred cow special last week. The other 20 are ones I got this week at what was billed as "normal" sale. I got 20 BM cows for me and 22 full mouth cows for B. We will...

    Horse prices 😳

Closest neighbor has about 5 or 6 mares. He had a nice little side business going selling horses until his stud died. He would send the horses down the treasure valley Black (can't remember his first name) and his students put 60 days on them. Then he would ride them. Some in the hills and...

    The rest of the story

So I know a man who went to the Red Bluff sale. Sold a horse for $15,000. At that same sale was that Border Collie that sold for $45,000. This local guy had owned that dog. The dog had been on my place moving cows as a young dog. Turns out that the guy traded that dog for that horse. Sold...

    End Table

You might be a rancher (or a redneck) if an old empty protein tub serves as an end table on your deck.

    Horse prices 😳

I saw a 10 year old gelding who was a decent looking horse. Ran in loose and they said he was broke to ride. A pig in a poke deal. It sold for $1,800. A local guy I know bought a gelding last summer. I think a 5 or 6 year old papered horse. Rode it in a feedlot some. Took it to Red Bluff...

What's the weather like at your place?

It was supposed to get down to 2 yesterday morning. Only got to 12. This morning it is 18 degrees with a small skiff of snow and still snowing lightly.

    We’re not cowboys!!!

I agree with you. A cowboy given as much time as they have had would also have a well thought out plan of action. Everything seems to take these people by surprise.

What's the weather like at your place?

The lows are supposed to be in the single digits the rest of the week. And it is the middle of next week before the high gets above freezing. One and a half snow flakes went drifting by this morning.

    And it begins

Because of hay shortage and expense I waited to start buying the one and done cows. I started yesterday. I picked up 10 cows at the sale. All broken mouth cows that are bred 7 or 7+. They averaged weighing 1,134 and cost $838. The good new of the day was those big fat irrigated pasture cows...

    My Dad is gone

Absolutely makes sense to me. There are places I go, things I do, and things I see that bring back my parents and others who I have been a big part of my life. Sorry for your loss. The sudden loss of a loved one is a difficult thing. But having been through a very long drawn out process. I...

    $45,000 dog

One day last summer Griz showed up at my house. That is 3 miles from his home. I captured him and put him in the dog kennel. I called Bert. It turned out that he was out of town. In fact out of state. And the hired man was supposed to be taking care of the dogs. I called the hired man and...

Trying to expand in custom calving and would like to know best recommendations for finding customers?

I know of a guy who did this. He may still do it. He put up enough extra feed that he would winter and calf out cows. He ran an ad in the Capital Press which is the PNW weekly agriculture news paper. Had a price per day listed.

    $45,000 dog

I was down at Bert's corral yesterday. He said that his dog's mother sold for $45,000 at Red Bluff. He figured that makes Griz worth at least half of that. So I looked up Red Bluff sale results. Sure enough Skittles brought $45,000 at the dog sale. My luck if I spent $45 on a dog it would...

    Black Herefords

#1=yes #2=no #3=no Baldies bring about 30 cents more than a straight Hereford steer at the auctions here. If you retain ownership and sell on the grid it will be a lot closer except the baldie could get the CAB bonus and the Hereford is not eligible for that.
