What's the weather like at your place?

This afternoon it was 33 and the sun out. No wind blowing. A nice afternoon. At 4:30 I was done with chores and headed back into the house. Met the wife coming out. She was going to tend her chickens and take the dogs for a walk. Just 30 minutes later I look out a window and it is snowing...

What's the weather like at your place?

14 degrees and a inch or so of new snow. And here I was getting ready for spring.

    Hormones during calving

I had one some years ago where the cow lost its calf. I got a calf to graft on the cow. This new calf wouldn't suck. This cow stood like a statue. Three days out in the middle of the corral I am pushing the calf under her. Squirting milk on its nose and into its mouth. No suck. Every day...

    Calving heifers

They might work until it comes time to sell the calves. Then you get to give those spotted calves away.

What's the weather like at your place?

Our forecast is pretty steady. High of 30 and a low of 20 with just a few degrees fluctuation one way or the other. Only 2 days in the 10 day forecast that hit 33. Snow on some of the south facing slopes is gone but the rest looks to stay for a while. The snow pack report puts us at 106%.

What's the weather like at your place?

It is 14 out this morning at sunrise accompanied by a nice breeze. I filled the feed bunk with hay for some hungry calves and scurried back to the house and the wood stove. I keep telling myself that spring is coming but the 10 day forecast doesn't show it.

    Tribute to a fine mare

Congratulations. Be sure to use spell check. And even if you can spell words like "incredulous" don't use them too often. It is a bad deal to have your readers running to a dictionary to figure out what you meant. But truth is that what you wrote deserves to be read by a much larger...

    Survey Takers

Asleep at 6:30? Were you still catching up from a wild weekend? Or are you really that old? I have been known to be asleep at that hour but I am kicked back in my recliner for a short nap.

    Calving heifers

Don't put unpleasant thoughts in H's head. He already has enough questionable thoughts hanging out in there.

    Calving heifers

I will have to tell neighbor B of your successful planning. I helped him on Saturday we ran his registered cows and the bred heifers through the chute. I don't know how many cows it was but we counted the bred heifers to make sure they were being fed correctly. There is 132 of them. Somehow...

    Cougar

We need a tag too. But they are only $16 and over the counter. Season opens January 1 and runs to December 31. You can buy a second tag. I am going to look into that. But literally everyone in the valley has a tag and would be willing to tag a cat if needed. This cat got dropped off at the...

    Cougar

This is a picture of the little "mountain lion" that I shot yesterday. Please disregard any previous comments I made referring to this dead animal as a cougar. It is a real by gosh "mountain lion."

    Cougar

Obviously this lady is armed and dangerous. Possibly has anger issues. If I were going after her with a gun (AND I AM NOT AND NEVER WOULD) I would not feel adequately armed with my old 30-30.

Ranching! Is it a living or a dying?

One of my neighbors is a 92 year old woman. The family runs about 500 cows. This time of year she is helping feed every day. When the cows head for the hills she harrows all the hay fields the cows spent the winter on. They raise all their own hay. She rakes every single strand of it. Oh...

Ranching! Is it a living or a dying?

I knew one old guy who at one time had about 400 cows and several thousand acres of wheat. When I knew him he was in his early 90's. He was down to about 20 cows and enough land to run them. He put up his own hay in little square bales. Only stacked them 2 high on his trailer. Didn't get it...

    Cougar

I shot a cougar this afternoon. The first time I ever had a chance to shoot one. Not a real big one but my first one. He was basically about 50 yards up the hill across from the end of my driveway. That is about a quarter mile from the house. Shot it with the 30-30 that rides in the gun...

    Our turn

Just got off the phone with the wife's daughter. She has a fever and a head ache. Going to get tested today. She said she has Imovec that she got from the doctor but is waiting to get tested before taking it.

There is money being made in the beef cattle profession

I have done a lot of direct marketing over the years. Quit doing it because I got tired of dealing with the people. I have never been an exclusive cow/calf operator. One 4 year stretch I bought the best heifers I could find. I vaccinated, PI tested, pelvic measured, and AI bred them. Did...

What is an annoyance that Ranchers have to deal with everyday?

Everyday small annoyance. The weather. Too hot and dry in the summer. Too cold and icy in the winter. There is 2 days in May and 2 days in October with great weather. There is something wrong with the weather the rest of the time. And ranchers will complain about it.

    Tribute to a fine mare

OK, that is a tear jerker. I am certain that it was much harder to write than to read. A great tribute to a four legged friend. Thank you for that. You have now dispelled any notion that you might be dumber than Biden in a spelling bee.
