    creep feed

Jersey Lilly, Stop trying to blame the seedstock breeders for shortfalls with the consumer. It's not the seedstock producers fault a customer was to ignorant to care for the purchased animal. Common sense tells us that a yearling bull cannot be turned out and expected to preform the same...

    creep feed

I don't understand how you can say we are doing our customers an injustice by creep feeding our calves! For starters you have no idea of how we are developing those calves from 205 days until 365 days. It seems startling that you would pass judgement based on one peice of information. (Do you...

    creep feed

We creep feed every calf from about 45 days right up until 205 days. We have done this for years, and never had a case of overeating. The secret is to find a creep feed with an Intake Modifier. Right now we are currentl feeding Purina's Impact Starter. (This is a complete ration), in...

    New Chute

We cannot seem to squeeze calves tight enough to brand without the hydraulic chute. They seem to want to lay down and no matter how tight you squeeze them with a manual it is not tight enough. As for the chute in the E.T. barn I prefer to elevate the front of the chute so there is a much...

    Help

I am trying to post a few pics, and am running into a problem. When I try to highlight the 3 boxes below the picture in photobucket, I also highlight the three headers (IMG URL, etc). Then when I paste it to the rachers page it only posts the 3 headings. I cannot get just the material in the...

How to find a good employer ?

Ag Tech, I am the manager of one of the larger angus herds in MO, and 26 years old. I understand what you are saying. When I graduated college I had spent all my life focused on the technical side of the purebred business(having grown up in it). As for the ability to deal with mechanical...

    heatwatch

tully, To set the system up it cost around $5,000 for the software and the receiver box(about the size of a cereal box). The transmitters that the cows wear are about $55 a piece. The nutrition of the recips consisted of 12 pounds of (1/3 cracked corn 1/3 wheat mids 1/3 soy hulls mixed with a...

    heatwatch

Tully, We have used the heat watch system for the last three years and have seen a dramatic improvement in our conception rates(both AI and Embryo Transfers). The operating system is fairly easy to understand and use. The only downside is the time and labor required to glue the transmitters...

Rancher quiz--what do you do in a situation like this?

To avoid future complications I would fasten a wire cattle panel to the outside of the angle iron.

    calving time!!

SW - Those are some great looking freeze brands. Did you use nitrogen or dry ice and alcohol. I use a ranch brand and cool it with dry ice and sunnyside denatured alcohol. I leave the iron on a neatly clipped and alcohol soaked spot for 55 seconds. However, I have noticed a lot of diffrence...

    Comments on bull EPD's

PPRM I like the train of thought you are on! Some of our more progressive bull customers are using large groups of full or 3/4 brothers and are noticing more uniformity in the calf crop. (More so than with paternal brothers. Brad

    Comments on bull EPD's

I agree with Doc Harris! EPD'S must be utilized in the correct manner, and be taken with a grain of salt. As a seedstock producer we can custom make a bull to compliment anyones herd. The bull buyer must know what he needs to add to his herd to improve it. If you are breeding range cows to...

    Comments on bull EPD's

If you guys don't use EPD's as a selection tool, how do you strive to make a better end product? If we as beef cattle producers don't use every piece of information available to make an educated decision, then shame on us. With all of the EPD's at our disposal it makes it easier and quicker to...

    Comments on bull EPD's

I called up the bulls you were looking at, and you can find bulls with more growth than that. You should be looking at bulls from the New Design line or the Precision line. Not that those bulls are bad but you can find a more complete bull without traveling the country.
