    Post a Ranch Photo!

Thanks 'H. But the trade off is that they only get that stuff for 5 months or less. The other 7 months they are on welfare.

Y'know, I never even thought to mention to the vet to watch the heifers for late term at preg testing time. I had actually about forgotten the whole ordeal. At the time one calf had obviously been bred, so I waited the appropriate amount of time and gave her a shot, then proceeded to put it out...

.... I went to feed the replacements and discovered a poorly fastened gate had allowed the bulls out of the corral and in with the heifers. They could have been out only for a couple of hours. The last two that appeared bred calved today, making a total of four. Live and learn they say...

It is a sad thing to lose a partner like that. Sorry for your loss.

    Helping at the Neighbours

There is some hired help. There is no shortage of horses around there, but for some reason the plan was not to do much sorting with them. I dunno. I just did as I was asked and helped as best I could, and used the horse whenever I had the chance.

    Helping at the Neighbours

I'll be sure to remind him! The work is ongoing there, it was time for me to get back to my own "to do" list.

    Helping at the Neighbours

No, we sorted on foot. Which explains why I'm wore out. We used horsed to bring groups up, and to work out the odd cranky cow. Facilities at this location were not really handy for horse of foot work, so it was kind of a "make do" operation.

    Helping at the Neighbours

Been giving the neighbours a hand weaning and sorting the last two days. Four of us managed to wean and sort around 1,200 calves. Or about 1/3 of the herd. I appeared to have a "captive audience" of freshly separated mothers and thought it would make a good picture. I Should have tried it in...

    Where is Sandhusker?

The way I remember it Sandy would make a statement and SH would respond with a "bwahahaahaa" and then explain the way it really was. Those were the good old days, although it didn't seem like it at the time as we were really suffering from the bse crisis.

Sun shine and warming up here. Don't know how you southerners deal with it ;)

I’m guessing if that were the case he would not hang his hat in Tennessee.

    Q

I pretty much just lurk a little anymore. Most of the fight has left me in my old age. I think I've been here since about '05, and I used to just lurk on Cattle Today, but there seems to be more discussion over there anymore so therefore I spend more time there. I do miss all the personalities...

    Haylage year

Straw is pretty hard to come by in these parts. I've got about 1000 dry bales half of which is carry over, so with the 2500 wrapped bales I have some options. I would like to have dry hay at calving time though, and I like to feed some in the fall before weaning to get the calves used to it...

    Haylage year

It was a tough year to make hay. Most of it ended up in plastic but at least it's done. Well, still have some oats standing but doubt it will dry enough to salvage them. It will be interesting to see how the cows fare on a pretty much straight silage diet this winter.
