Measures taken to warm cattle/protect from cold?

It's already been done...if our calves get too cold (and I'm talking when they are born below 15 degrees or in a lot of wind) we bring them into the house and throw them in a calf warming box. You could put a jacket on them but you are eliminating heating the whole calf. Our calf warming box...

    Triplets

Had a set of triplets born out of a 4 year old angus cross cow. My husband saw the first get born, get up and suck, and thought all was good. Went back a few hours later and the bull calf had gotten squished when she laid down to deliver the 2 identical heifer calves. All are dead and each...

    Late March 2014

I love seeing all your pictures, especially this time of the year. Reminds me that spring is happening elsewhere and will eventually get here! I love the pics of the twins---I myself am a twin and occasionally I email this pic to my twin brother for fun :-)

Cows and bulls of a different species

The wolves do follow the elk...they've been quiet for a few years now as we can legally hunt them in our area. They are considered a predator. The elk will naturally leave the feed ground once they can travel in the springtime. They are literally snowed in at this feed ground till snow melts...

Cows and bulls of a different species

Yeah we get paid. These elk in our area migrate to the feed grounds to be fed so they stay off of cattle ranches. If they didn't get fed they'd break into all our stackyards and we all know what happens when cattle and elk mix---risk of brucellosis. A percentage of elk licenses in WY go towards...

Cows and bulls of a different species

Bulls are all low birth weight...no polled bulls though. Only drawback is low marbleing :-)

Cows and bulls of a different species

We just started feeding elk on a feed ground not too far from our home...filling in for the remainder of the season. The big bulls have lost their antlers already, younger guys not quite yet. Feeding about 8-9pounds per animal. My husbands family has fed elk for forever. Husbands great-grandpa...

Gonna try to post some winter pics

George...no heated cab :-( Here's a pic from last winter/spring. Was walking the cat down the packed down trail from our 4 up hitch and hay sled to a new stackyard needing plowed out. Fell off of it---but eventually got unstuck. Wish it was heated!

Gonna try to post some winter pics

Bringing the heavy first calf heifers home from Webb Place ...took them down there to scour guard them. Woulda worked them here a home but the corral, alleyway, and squeeze chute were completely snowed under. This is one of the drifts around our home...measured the drift between the buildings...

Any thought on a John Deere 5100E?

Thanks all...the ranch has a 6200 and 2 6400's already and they are great tractors. In laws own them...we were looking at this smaller model primarily cause its more affordable for us at this point :-) Lots to think about and consider!

Any thought on a John Deere 5100E?

We are looking at renting(and then possibly buying) a JD 5100E with a loader during haying this year for stacking, mowing, or raking. This tractor has 85hp p.t.o., not big enough quite for our baler but it looks to be perfect sized for the other jobs. Curious if any of you have any thoughts on...

    High elevation pap tested bulls

I'll check Gittleson Angus out...we're waiting for a return call back from Coyote Creek Ranch ;-) Yeah, we won't buy a bull unless they pap under 40...and if we could afford the test we pap test our bred yearlings as well. Last I heard Dr Holt was charging $20/head. Pays off in the end Im...

    High elevation pap tested bulls

We have bought bulls from them the past 2 years---very nice bulls but this year they are offering only about 25-30 bulls instead of a good 115 to pick from, we heard Mark who has been there for a long time isn't there anymore and the ranch is selling....reason why we are searching for other...
