    alternative to wrestling calves...

Lately we have been having troubles finding enough people to wrestle calves at our brandings. We are also having some issues with calves suffering trauma due to being handled too roughly by the wrestlers. I don't want to use a tipping table. That is out of the question. But what other options...

    Twisted Uterus

Sorry for your luck. We've also had a twisted uterus this year. Sometimes when the cow has been going a while, the uterus is very frail and will tear if you mess with it too much. I had to learn this the hard way! I don't even untwist them when doing a c-section until the calf is out and the...

    Whats your favorite ranch/farm dog???

We run New Zealand Heading dogs. Tougher than boiled owl turds. :D We find they aren't as "sensitive" as BC's but work much the same. In NZ, if a dog doesn't work well, they don't keep it around and would never use it for breeding. As a result, NZHD all look quite different (much the same way...

    Sick calf question

Might be acidosis. We sometimes have calves that are affected. They walk around like they are drunk. I mix 1 TBSP baking soda with a litre of water and tube them. Works every time!

    hook doctor

Anyone ever used one of these contraptions? www.ritcheytags.com/hook-doctor.php Do they work or are they a gimmick? Our rotten old cows just love to try and squish hands when you retag them.

mineral $ per head per year?

What about mixing salt and the mineral? (assuming the mineral mix is void of salt). Do you have to have salt in the mineral in order for the cows to eat it? Or could you leave the mineral out and also put put a salt block? Thoughts?

How did the Aussies do it?

We had a pair of Aussies working for us at the ranch a few years ago. One of them made us a CD full of songs from their Homeland. There are quite a few Slim songs on it and it was the first time I had heard him as well. Have you listened to Corb Lund? He's an Albertan artist that also tells...

    scour vaccine timing

Can someone tell me more about the Biomoss mineral blend? Is is available in Canada? Price? I completely agree about scours being a management issue. However, the ranch where I work calves cows out in a feedlot situation. While I don't fully agree with this, this is how they want it done. On a...

    scour vaccine timing

Sorry, I meant for cows already on the scour vaccine program. When you give their annual scour vaccine. Fall vs. close to calving.

    scour vaccine timing

Is anyone giving scour vaccines when they preg-check in the fall? We usually do it a few weeks before the herd starts calving, but I've heard it is now approved for earlier administration. This would be great as I really hate running the girls through the chute when they are so close to calving.

    Surgery question

I am sorry to hear about your other dog, HD. Tough to loose a friend you've had that long. My parents' pup was about the age of yours at surgery. She had the first hip done in May and is completely recovered now. She's full of life and loves to run. You would never know she had the surgery...

    Surgery question

My parents had a hip done on their young Golden. Are they talking about removing the femoral head? It was a very long recovery for their dog and involved strict rest and little exercise plus a lot of pain meds. Kind of a tough deal for a pup but she's alright now.

    bale deck cost...

I don't know where you are located or if this will help, but a shop in Duchess, Alberta deals with a lot of bale decks and installs them. When we priced one out several years ago, it would have been about 10K for a brand new model, installed. The shop is called Centennial Garage if memory serves...

    Pics from the last week.

Dylan, may I ask where your dogs came from? You call them "McCallum" collies; are these a type of border collie? Thanks for posting the great pics. We lived in Brooks area for nine years and some days I miss the open sky country.

    Any Bad Fires?

thanks for the welcomes. We were not able to move our cattle; only open the gates on range and hope for the best. There really was no time as we were evacuated at 4am and we were just trying to get our horses and dogs to safety. We were in a hotel for a week and now are allowed back home. The...

    Any Bad Fires?

We were evacuated from the Meldrum area four days ago. Fire is 15 000 hectares and still growing. The fire crews took us up to our place in a chopper to check on the house and cattle this morning. I thought that was mighty nice of them. :D Looks like we're going to be out for a while. I wish...
