    Sad state of US AG

I've been to several winter meeting over the last two months and have some thoughts from what I've seen and heard; a couple meetings were mainly crop farmers and some were mainly beef producers. At the crop meetings, I'm...

    Timed AI breeding

Denny, I agree with the cows getting strung out when they don't catch but I don't have the time to heat check. We started the heifers on grain about 40 days ago, and plan to breed last week of march. Its close to what you did they will just be on a little longer.

    Timed AI breeding

Strawking, the protocol we have used is listed in the back of most of the AI books, genex, abs, etc, Fixed-time AI. We give a shot of gnrh and put the cidr in, on day 7 we pull the cidr and give a shot of lute. Then 60 hrs after pulling cidr(+/- 6hrs) we breed and give another shot of gnrh. We...

    Timed AI breeding

Does anyone use timed breeding? We've done it for the last 3 years( gnrh, cidr, lute than gnrh at time of AIing, I think heifers at 54 hours and cows at 60. We didn't heat check at all, this year we hit 80% on the cows but heifers are at 50%. Typically we have been 60-70% on the cows, this year...

    Weather and calving

This all boils down to what fits your business plan and your conditions. An oldtimer told me real early when I was getting started, before you breed a cow know who your buyer is.. Many years later I started to understand what he was saying. In this business you need to spend alot of time with...

    Night Calving

we've been using that practice for 5 years now and I think it has an effect. We've had about 15% calve between midnight and 5 am, about 65% come between 6 am and 2 pm. We feed around 5 pm. Its sure not 100% but I think it adds a little bit of predictablity.

    banding horns

several dairy guys in our area, band instead of dig. They've said it works well, takes a few weeks. Also said they gotta be real tight, sometimes have to use a dremel to create a groove for the band.

    Quonset Barns

We don't do that type of building just the hoop buildings. From what I've seen of them they hold together well. We have had Two of our buildings go through tornados and stayed put, pole barns that were nearby went down.

    pasture management?

In Michigan we are dependent on weather condtions. Spring to early june brings abundent grass, too much so as to keep it grazed. This year turn out was late because of cold conditions, as with most of everyone else. Our management has changed from rotational grazing on our ground, to rented...

Tried to Cut my Thumb Off--Added a Pic--Almost Healed

We band at weaning. This is my daughters favorite thing to do,count to two and crank that band tight. She's now 13 and I gave her a band to carry with her so she can explain to the boys what its for.. So far no problem with boys.

    Annual precipitation

IN michigan 35-38" is about the norm. This year we had about 120" of snow at our place, we are 60 miles north of Grand Rapids. Snow amounts vary ALOT depending on location. Our weather is influcenced alot by Lake Michigan. The last two years very little moisture from june 1 to sept 1. It can...

    seeding clover thru mineral

I understand it'll take time to see results. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't wasting $. We have 80ac from the neiboring farm that we bought several years go. The ground was real tired and we've been bringing it back with a ton of chicken litter/yr after first cut, 50# urea at green up but I...

    seeding clover thru mineral

I remember a thread talking about using clover in the mineral to reseed. What time of year does this work best? I'm thinking probably spring and fall. After we cut and bale we will rotate cows thru to clean up the fields I'm wondering if I'd get any clover to take in mid to late june? Suggestions?
