    Red Angus/Simmental cross

I have Sim-Angus (black) cows and get along great with them. A blanket statement about disposition just doesn't seem to capture the picture for the whole breed. They're probably not as docile as say, a Hereford, but I get along fine and they're better than a couple of Angus cows I recently...

Balancers- To Cross or Not to Cross?

Simple, you just need to call Dan Warner. Here's his site: http://www.warnerbeef.com/ He's a real cowman with a very good set of Balancer cows. Young fellow that tries real hard and is not a fly-by-night operator. Absolutely won't be a waste of your time to speak to him. Don't worry about...

Fifteen years ago, October 2, 1998

Good story Soapweed. With regard to commission and such, we sold our calves and delivered this week. These were weaned calves eating grain. Loaded them at 8:30, hauled 2 miles and weighed on the truck with a 2% pencil shrink. Then hauled 130 miles and weighed on the ground, just for...

Prayers please for a good cowboy

No words to describe the gut-wrenching feeling a person gets when reading your story, Wyoming Wind. Terrible stuff, how could anyone do it? I'm sitting here wondering what will become of this. This is 1st degree assault and the names of the scumbags are known by at least you and possibly...

    Video Commission vs. Sale Barn?

Just doing a little homework. I'd like to know what the standard commission rate is for selling calves on the video. Was told 2.5% by one fella but I've got a lot more friends here that can dispute or confirm it. Curious what the typical sale barn figure would be, I guess including yardage to...

    Boots

I wear laceup Justin brand work boots. They have a yellow fabric label on the top of the tongue that says "Original Justin Work Boots". This is my second pair and they seem to just last and last. I faithfully use "Sno Seal" to grease those suckers up and that really seems to be the key to...

    can someone explain?

I'm only guessing, as I do in most thoughts I have in this life, but it seems a guy ought to have a couple of potential buyers lined up before he turns in the Wagyu bulls. Also, only use them on heifers and be sure to have a load of calves to go. Agribeef feeds a bunch of Wagyu cattle in Idaho...

Feed salesmen can turn cattle feeders into millionaires

That's why feedyard managers use consulting nutritionists. These folks are not feed salesmen, but advice salesmen. They are measured on performance of the cattle and financial results. Kind of puts me in mind of the adage that states "Never ask a barber if you need a haircut". :D

    Consultant fees?

Soap, I'm calling you out on the "nutrition takes the place of genetics" statement. That mule of yours is never going to be a thoroughbred, no matter how much you feed him. I say that genetics are cheaper in the long run than nutrition. I see a whole lot of feedlot closeouts and I assure you...

IT'S THE PITTS -- AUCTION SPEEDBUMPS

I might go by the handle "Starter Steve". I help 'em get the bidding started and then when things start to warm up to the actual market value of the animal I have long since bailed out :!:

    Hey Leanin' H!

Saw a whole bunch of fence in southern South Dakota recently that had two H braces side by side but there was a good foot or more gap between them. No wire or anything across that gap and there were plenty of those situations on both sides of the highway. Maybe someone can enlighten me on what...

    Consultant fees?

Friend of mine was a good feed salesman and PhD nutritionist. He quit selling feed and went to work for a cattle company and he said "everything changed". Guess it depends on whether you're buying or selling :!:

    Freezer Beef Price

I believe he said it was a 1,000 lb. live weight so that ought to be about 630 lb. carcass, or so. Smaller critter for sure, but I know the guy keeps back his non-gainers for freezer beef while the big, fast-growers go to the packer.

    Freezer Beef Price

A buddy of mine purchased a freezer beef from a local rancher. Animal was fed conventionally in a feedlot and harvested at the local locker. He told me the fellow charged him $2.55/lb. carcass weight for the critter and $85/lb. for processing for a grand total of $3.40/lb. packaged price...

Circle C Day 2013, Cody, Nebraska

I haven't so much as stepped inside, but I think I love the Circle C store. The town of Cody can take pride in that kind of an outfit. Looks like a big time was had at the celebration. Great stuff and thanks for sharing.

    Olie Bull

A fellow that I work with a little has a large group of Olie yearling heifers and another large group of heifer calves. They are dang nice looking cattle and he's getting what he wanted in that Sim-Angus cross. They are big-bodied and big-hipped cattle but not lanky. Of course, they're not as...

    Bull Info

Partner of mine has a bunch of them. Not very old in his herd, nothing over 3-year olds. They have good udder structure at this young age. If you want small framed cattle then the Programs are not for you. They're not huge but big enough. Perhaps not as thick made as I would have thought...

    McDonald's cuts Angus burgersfrom menu

I think we were tackling the topic of whether or not the Angus breed can live up to it's own claims of superior eating experience. That's the issue that I addressed anyway. Angus is the best combination of marbling in a "real world cow" package. Wagyu have more marbling but don't make much...
