    Tag or don't tag???

This is interesting. We have some new purebreds that we tagged and weighed at birth. We don't tag any commercial calves at birth. Calving out on grass, we would be lucky to get things tagged in 2 hours per day. We tag everything at branding with a floppy and a CCIA electronic tag. I can...

    Early start to winter

We had rain last weekend. Almost an inch. The first real moisture since August. 2 days later and we were under a fire ban. never hit 0C until about noon today. They are talking snow, but if it is a form of moisture I am doubting we will get it. We don't have a designated fire lighter for...

    WLPIP

We have used WLPIP here. It is an easy way to hedge against the $, the basis and the futures market. I like it because it is simple, doesn't require a hedge account or margin calls and is pretty straightforward. I also like the fact that you don't need to sell the cattle to get paid...

    Bleach blondes

That's not a bad idea. We use the "orange tag of death". When we treat, or otherwise mess with a cow she gets the orange, easily visible, no excuses addition. I thought you were targeting something like this...

    Mid April photos 2014

I empathize with your sister. Around here, Billy drives on non school days and I shovel or get gates, or cut string. There are advantages to being 10 or just knowing how to drive.

    More April 2014 photographs

That is the same as our table and I love it. Mostly the table here is due to an extreme shortage of help and the knowledge that there are days when 1 person has to go it alone.

    New Bull

Our new AN bull was delivered this week. A BPF Special Focus son. I think he will be OK. He has a pretty good set of numbers and a nice scan, combined with a good mom, large scrotal, great semen test and a friendly disposition. He will be used on some SMAN heifers, some AN commercial heifers...

    Composting of Dead Stock

There is some good information here as well. http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/engineer/facts/09-025.htm I am just wondering if anyone has any personal experience and how it worked, pitfalls, etc.

    Composting of Dead Stock

Has/Does anyone on here use composting as a way to deal with dead stock? Insights or ideas are welcome. We are considering doing something a little bit more formal here with some of our losses.

    Who?

I always felt we may have lost one or two to abortions every year back when we used live vaccine on pregnant cows, and I think it happened more maybe with young cows that may have missed the first shot for some reason and older cows nearing the end of their productive life, but that may be just...

    Bummer Calves

You put a name (not a number) on their eartag and get your kids to bottle feed. 3 to 5 years later as an attached, full grown oxen they will not look potty at all. They really bloom around year 4. (We are close to having kids convinced about the plan to sell him and use the proceeds for a...

    Feeding advice from the experts!

We have done nearly everything you mention to winter cows. We swath graze a mixture of Oats/Barley/Fall Rye and also have used Triticale. We also bale graze hay, greenfeed, straw, etc. This winter we actually wound up feeding barley to save our feed pile through a pretty chilly 5 months. We...

    Mid March 2014

Great pics and to see you back in action. Since it is still tough to get on you certainly cannot be expected to get any gates, so things look fantastic for the months ahead. :D

Food for thought for winter calving

We have had a new experience this winter with some purebreds I bought. The first 7 calves born in winter have consumed more time and labour than 200 or so born in May/June (even without tagging and weighing). I know our -74F in the wind is extreme, but as near as I can figure for us the cost...

    February photos 2014

I like how one is training to be a trick rider and the other seems to always have his spurs up ahead of the point of the shoulder waiting on the chute. Nice pics. I would trade you some weather right about now...

    Tractor Tires

Our 4240 has 20.8x34 that are near and dear. They are about $600 more than an 18.4x38. We wound up getting a set of less used duals off Kijiji for $500 (for the set). Don't want to think about what they would cost now.
