    Looks Like Winter

If you could keep most of that close to home, that would be great. Cows look good.

    Range cubes

I know with Wheat DDGS you have to be careful with the Cal:Phos ratio since the DDG are high in phos and low in Ca.

    Range cubes

100% agree with the feed test recommendation. Best money you can spend.

Some pics and maybe a video or two...

These oats are a cover crop over some new alfalfa. I debated cutting them, but it was wet and I didn't want to leave the swaths laying on the alfalfa for weeks waiting for it to dry. We have swath grazed a lot in the past and it is a great way to winter feed. We have moved more to standing...

    Delivering DDGS to the herd?

Neighbour built a big feeder out of an old air seeder cart. Holds lots, and was super cheap to build. Not sure if he pulls it with the truck or not.

    Delivering DDGS to the herd?

We built a nifty feed dispenser for the bale deck this summer out of an old fuel tank. It will hold a lot of feed, and you could build it bigger if you manufacture your own. I will try to grab some pics, or google Nifty Feed Dispenser.

    alfalfa

Interesting. We use lots of alfalfa, with some tame pastures 75%+Alfalfa. We usually seed with a Case IH 6200 press drill on 6" centres and put it in 1/4" deep. Depending on our target we usually try to hit about 5# per acre seeding rate. Rain makes it grow, and patience makes it rain...

Curt Pate, Whitt Hibberd, Bud Williams, Low Stress

Interesting thread. My 2 cents would be that the skills that apply to handling livestock apply nearly equally as well to working with people, just the flight zone is tougher to gauge. I agree with the pre-flow thought when it comes to working cattle. I had the cool opportunity to be a speaker...

    Automated weighing

We are looking at some upgrades to our handling system as our cowherd and our purebred herd grows. Currently we have a large NORAC scale that we use for weighing groups and individual cattle, but we are looking at some cement and a scale under our squeeze next year (maybe?). Just wondering...

    John Deere 6E series tractors

We went to a 714 Fendt. It is older, but... it was still $20,000 cheaper than what our dealer wanted for a Deere with 20 less horsepower and 4000 more hours. It has increased our productivity roughly 20% on every job, including baling and it cut my fuel bill by 50%. I went over my fuel bills...

    Chain saws

Finally shelled out on a proper Stihl a couple of years ago and kick myself we never did it sooner. Do the maintenance on it, and use the Stihl canned gas and it works better than any saw we have ever owned. I am currently looking at one of the cordless Stihl ones. A neighbour bought his wife...

    John Deere 6E series tractors

My wife's uncle has the predecessor D series and really likes it. My JD mechanic neighbour says that the 4 cylinder motors are not as good as the 6 (FWIW). We moved away from a Deere tractor last year (first time in 30+ years) and I will not likely go back.

    Fences

We use a lot of electric fence here. I prefer it to barb wire as we find the maintenance less and the installation cost much lower. single wire paddock seperations and hot/ground/hot three wire for perimeter fence. With modern fencers, lots of ground rods, remote control fault finders, etc...

Day of the Eclipse at the Spearhead Ranch, August 21, 2017 - Part Two

Great day. Missed the eclipse here. Was checking fence and forgot to look. I can't believe Sparky didn't make a proper viewing contraption with welding glass.
