    Great Momma's

Yep, she's kind of became my favorite. I picked her out of a friends cast offs. He felt she was just a little too small.. We calve at different times so I took her and gave her a few more moths to grow. She has a really great disposition... I'll catch these two cows with each others calves on...

    Great Momma's

Here's two first calf heifers fighting over each others calves. The first cow to calve had the brockle coming over trying to steal hers. Notice she kind of gave up when she laid down to have hers. I say kind of in that I had to grab a panel and fight to separate these two. Females all hormoned...

    Great Momma's

I've always really appreciated cows with great maternal instincts. In our October Calvers, we had two that dropped twins and went right to raising them. The solid Black is actually a first calf heifer. We are on irrigated pasture here and good winter groceries. Twins usually do pretty well.

Using side exit to get calf on cow

Sometimes it feels like we are doing to good with this calf. I seriously went out once on Monday and he was laid out, that glossied over look to his eye... I started rubbing his neck and I swear he came back to life. The vets gave us a amber colored product that is 5 cc IM... They label it as...

Using side exit to get calf on cow

Absolutely doing this. 2 of the 3 calves are out running in the pasture. This guy just can't seem to get over. The night I took the picture I was pretty hopeful. He just can't seem to get strong now.

Using side exit to get calf on cow

I agree. This specific cow is an older one we never had problems with. Her calf got a horrible case of scours. I travel with my fulltime job and the wife ended up taking the calf to the vets. It was there for several days. When it got back, it smelled like vet clinic and she wasn't sure she...

Using side exit to get calf on cow

http://s16.photobucket.com/user/PPRM/media/Nursing%20cow%20in%20chute.jpg.html A calving pen is ideal. However, a squeeze chute is all I have for this. I used to drop kick panels to access a cows udder for the calf. There can be several issues doing that. The bar above the kick panels may be...

Prospective opportunity to increase our cowherd

The direction Choice Cutout is taking, I'd say sooner is better than later if you can do it.

    optimism for 2016

Can't control the weather and there is only so much we can do about the markets. But, this is stuff that is in our wheelhouse... And, this calf should still be a nice $800-1000 coupon at some point.

Prospective opportunity to increase our cowherd

I generally agree on the hay part. Especially when you factor in the replacement of what is taken off with the fertilizer you put back on (Assuming you aren't putting it back on through your cows in the winter). That being said, I now own haying equipment. I am growing and have yet to find a...
