    Training with rattlesnakes

So, as some of you know, I publish a newspaper for a living. Last week, I came out of the closet in regard to my snake and spider hobby. I thought some of y'all might get a kick out of reading it. :) http://thebadger.ca/2011/01/03/great-legs-are-sometimes-hairy/

    RFID tags vs Branding

Weird! I'm calling today to find out what the deal is. Also, the CFIA is angry at me. Again. For Christmas next year, I will have someone make dartboards with my face on it. I'll sell them to all the people I have pissed off in the previous year of publishing a newspaper and $10 says the...

    RFID tags vs Branding

Then why the info on the government site? I will call them just for sport on Monday - seeing as I am in Winnipeg anyway and all. :) (I am not doubting you, only curious about what the government has to say.)

    RFID tags vs Branding

Says here there is though: http://web2.gov.mb.ca/agriculture/programs/index.php?name=aaa04s02 and the livestock brand inspecting manager in Sask. told me they have developed a program now. I will call them and find out.

    RFID tags vs Branding

There are 12 Sask brand inspectors that work in Manitoba, but I think they also have their own brand registry now too. :)

    RFID tags vs Branding

I will remember that tip - after I get a ranch and some cattle. lol. I have the brands though, that's a start. ;)

    RFID tags vs Branding

Thanks Kato :) I'm coming home to Manitoba in a few days for Christmas! Not looking forward to the Winnipeg weather... please do what you can and make it warm for me! I have no idea really, I never even thought about that aspect.

    RFID tags vs Branding

I just can't imagine the risk one would take in stealing cattle - or anything else I guess. But in this business, there is such a code of conduct and ethics and the humiliation would be unbearable, I imagine. I guess desperation can drive folks to do weird things... but wow.

Secret to a long and happy marriage

LOL. I didn't see that one coming, actually. Cute!

    RFID tags vs Branding

    Totally. Here's my op-ed on it: http://thebadger.ca/2010/12/11/is-branding-necessary-do-cows-need-grass/

    RFID tags vs Branding

I know the two are so different, it shouldn't even be a debate. But it is. Some in Canada are making the case that with the CCIA (Canadian Cattle Identification Agency) RFID tags, branding will no longer have a place in the industry. A rancher who had two pair of pure breds rustled would beg to...

    Training with rattlesnakes

I've been struck at a few times while photographing them, but I'm pretty good at knowing how far back I need to be and I like to keep about a foot of extra space between the end of their strike range and myself. :) I haven't taken the dog out with me yet when looking for snakes, but I plan to...

    What breed(s) do you see?

Thanks Kato :) His mother was pure bred chocolate lab and they were fixin' to breed her and had a stud picked out. A husky mix got into the yard before the mating and voila – my Halo was born. I have had so, so many people ask if he has wolf in him that was just curious if it was seen in this...

    What breed(s) do you see?

I know partially what he is, but there's at least one other breed mixed in, perhaps more. He's a dog from up north from here... so the breed is likely to be hardy and cold-tolerant.

    Training with rattlesnakes

Were you herping for willardi or just happened across one while roaming? I've looked for willardi a few times in Arizona, but wasn't successful. Very nice snake! Here's a link to a medical story which provides some of our non snake loving friends more cause to live and let live...

    2010 Flood, Maple Creek, SK

Thanks for posting that pic. I think what it was, was five inches of rain, but the rain fell on the Cypress Hills south of Maple Creek and the Alberta town Irvine. So, if you can imagine all those hundreds of square miles of rain roaring down the hills, following the paths of the various creeks...

He didn't drive into it - that's how fast the water came up. We just replaced the truck.
