Trying to get the neighbor's hay baled

He and I have been pecking away at his third cutting, rolled a few this morning. Big clouds with a SW breeze toughened it about 7:15 this evening. He had the rake running, I started to bale. His wife came to rake so both balers could get after it, everyone got about a round done when the...

    Sorry for the outbreak

I read where the Oregon National Guard is being activated to combat the Corone, seriously there are only 667 ICU beds in your state? I hope they're good shots, I imagine a virus bug is a pretty small target...

    About to start baling here

It's been too dry and full of bugs for much grass hay, but first cutting irrigated alfalfa looks decent . Some cheat but not as bad as last year . The pairs sold in Crawford today looked to be heading SE. At least half the yearlings sold already. Sure glad Corbitt thinks it's a wet year...

    Happy Thanksgiving

To one and all. I'm truly thankful for the exact same things I was 40 years ago, won't be around in 40 more. My point is the real important things don't change. Happy Thanksgiving friends.

How to not get the yearlings checked

Can you switch that pivot back and take a bad tie-rod end off that rake tractor? I didn't think that was the whole trouble, and, yep. Started out with 3 fresh rake wheels, and all the teeth we had. The rake is almost right, just needs a fresh tire. Tie rod end wound up switching an axle leg...

    Helloooo

Our winter has turned mild, cow's on stalks are faring well. Spose the ol gal is saving it for calving time? Everybody else has weather, we used to sneak thru here. Looks like January's gonna treat us alright.

    Benifits of getting older

Bob Seger in Rapid City the 12th, now Pam Tillis, Suzy Boguss and Terri Clark an hour away Saturday night. May make 6 weeks this year that haven't bit, hard. Been getting some decent hay baled.

    Having 2019

I baled 194 alfalfa bales today that didn't smell moldy, and weren't 5 percent regrowth. Made 90 some tonight that were as good as possible for having an inch of rain on it. Wasn't even lightning coming fast at us. Maybe we're in a drought, I suppose fires are impending. My reason for...

Just a haying between the rains

I hope a lot of you have this problem, and I wish everyone could. Just once. We usually don't, dang I miss a good 2 month dry spell... Got first cutting alfalfa up right, but we have grown a batch of fuel since then. How's the rest of the world getting along?

    Pretty quiet

I reckon this site is aptly named. Best of luck getting them all worked and to grass. Don't forget to grease the hay equipment. Would 11 days a week be enough?

    Branding 2018

Not very glamorous but the big bunch is done. Four of us got them across the cradle before dark. All but two hours acted rainy, but it never got wet where we were. Calves sure get big in 7 weeks. Nice to see winters effort amount to something. I'm not talking percentage anymore...

    John SD

I read elsewhere that John SD passed this morning. I enjoyed his perspective, no doubt honed by a life in good ranch country. If it rained that year. Just like every place.

    How'd calving go?

I know every year is different for nearly every outfit. We got by real easy this year except for crooked front legs in one bunch and malpresentations. Calf losses were minimal until half done and that coincided with our twins. Backwards zapped us. A couple things I haven't seen before...

    Wheat Crop

I was just curious how the wheat turned out in north-western SD and Eastern MT. I guess western ND would be in the same area.. Our harvestors go to the Billings area before they go back home before the fall run. They told us this summer the best wheat they had cut so far was in Nebraska...

    Cornstalk grazing project

Commencing November 15th and 16th I turned 240 cows in a rented circle of stalks. I started time grazing another half-circle the week before Christmas, until about New Years Day, then free choice on that 1/2 for a week. They spent until yesterday and today on another half-circle, plus where...

    JD 7000 planter

I probably could have snuck this in elsewhere, but my question is, has anyone had any experience modifying or retrofitting the transmission gears on one of these? With modern seed sizes my summer employer is pulling his hair out planting less than 4.3 mph, or over 6. It seems that there could...

Western South Dakota at the "truck stop"

Anybody that visits with a couple of loads of pipe headed north, we've got some hay goin south ASAP. I understand this is somewhat commercial, but I'm not not making any of it, and a long time southern rancher needs a little help. Please pm if anything comes up. Destination: 150 southeast of...

    "Backwards" education (for cowhunter)

I was 9 or 10 and we(Mom and the little brothers) had gone to town. Probably J C Penneys for clothing, maybe some parts, and the last stop at Alco: wooden spoons were on sale so Mom bought three brand spankin new vacuum packed on the cardboard specemins... On the way home I found those darn...
