    Cull cows

I sold 20 dry cows yesterday in Philip. They weighed 1521 pounds and brought $119.25/lb. I was filing some papers from last year and I sold some on the same day that weighed 1494 pounds at $80.20. Is hamburger a third higher in price as it was last year? If not it probably should be.

    May calving

Got my first calf out of the cows yesterday in a blizzard, right on schedule about 2 weeks before their due date. I can't wait till May! My heifers are on a break between the AI calves and the bull bred calves. Great moisture here, probably at least 2 1/2 inches. :P

    Trip to California

The family and I just got back from a little vacation in Southern California, the weather was great the traffic was horrible. Anyway, we had a layover in Denver on the way home and I'm sitting in the terminal and a guy walks up that's a dead ringer for Kevin Costner. Never thought much more...

    $10 per pound

My cousin sold a couple baby calves Monday. His 60 pound heifer calf brought $600! I knew I should be calving in the winter!

Food for thought for winter calving

For those of you who are calving now in this brutal weather and wondering why let me give you some eye opening numbers. For those of you that are happily calving in this brutal weather you need not read any further. .  These sales figures and average weights come from 3...

    Calf prices

Went to the calf sale yesterday to watch my friends calves sell. The sale was hot. Steers at 780 pounds @ $171.50 steers 613 pounds @ $207.75 steers 540 pounds @ $221.00 The thing that never ceases to amaze me is how close the dollar figure is between heavy steers and light steers. In the...

    SDSU vs NEB

The family and I went down to Lincoln over the weekend to watch the Jacks and Huskers. We were very proud of the Jackrabbits even though they lost. Met a lot of nice people and had a great time. My nephew goes to school at Neb and as we were walking to our gate to get into the stadium my son...

River Rat is elbow deep about now

He and the crew are in the middle of a 2 day AI marathon right now. Their plan was to breed about 530 head of heifers. I've heard of tennis elbow before but never heard of breeders elbow.

    Fast and furious

Last summer we used CIDR's to syncronize our heifers and mass bred them in one day. We got 61% to settle leaving us with 118 heifers to calve. I've never bred heifers this way before and I predicted 2 weeks ago today that they would be done calving by their due date. Well today is their due...

    Selection works

Back in the mid 90's our cow herd had gotten to a point that I was totally disgusted and ready to start a new direction. We had gotten caught up in the race for frame in Angus bulls of the 80's. Our young cows were tall, lacked capacity and volume, and had very little milk and even had some...

    Hay Auction

I am going to sell some alfalfa/orchard grass at auction soon. Time and date are yet to be determined but I'm thinking about March 30th. That will give me a couple weeks to get some advertising done. The majority of the hay will be 3rd cutting with a RFV of 150 and 19.8% protein. There will...

    Greetings from sunny Florida!

Hey guys just checking in, the sun was getting a little hot by the pool anyway. The family and I came down Tuesday and will be here till Sunday morning. Spent two days at Universal Studios and off to Sea World today. We booked a deep sea fishing excursion for tomorrow but the storm in...

    Hay swap

I have a unique problem. I have too much good hay. I got four cuttings of alfalfa/orchard grass from my pivot this year. We usually get three cuttings but with the early spring we started in May instead of June. My problem is that I don't have enough average quality grass type or millet...

    Attempt at pictures from Swede

My daughter has been working all afternoon at posting some pics. Here goes. These are the 12 half brothers we bought from river rat last fall. Another view. These are all sired by Ideal 7265. They are getting a 44 megacal ration. One more view. Feeding the heifer calves. The...

    Cows for sale?

We ultra sounded our cows today. Since the moisture situation is not good and the future is questionable, I had the vet group and identify the cows as to their state of pregnancy. This is what we have been doing lately anyway to keep age groups of calves segregated and healthier. Overall...

    Proactive drought plans

I was just wondering what you in the drought areas are planning going forward. I hope to wean earlier than normal and probably sell feeders earlier too. I think my pastures will last if the cows are dry by early to mid September. I have never used creep feeders but I plan to this year and...

    An observation I made today

I spent a lot of time at the Valentine Auction today. Last fall when I pregnancy checked my cows I put the bulls back in with the open cows that were 10 years old and younger and sound for fall breeding to try to add some value to those cows. Today I sold both the bred cows and the opens. The...

    Sold some steers

We sold 2 loads of steers yesterday in Valentine. The sale was hot and the market was great. One load of the steers weighed 659# and brought $1.7525 and the smaller load weighed 597# at $1.8375. I hope the buyer still has room to make some money too. I've got another load of steers to go but...

    New style of weaning

Weaning time around here has always meant bringing in the herd, sorting, vaccinating, locking up the calves with their mothers right across the fence for a few days and then taking the cows away. This year I planted a mix of oats, turnips, radishes and sudan grass right beside my weaning pen...

    May/June Calving Update

In the winter of 2008 I was considering moving my calving date later in the year to avoid most of the spring storms that March and early April are famous for. I asked for advice on this forum and after a couple months of debating I decided to pull the trigger, actually I decided to keep my...
