A Libyan security official says one American consulate employee has been shot dead and another wounded in the hand during an attack at the U.S. consulate in the eastern city of Bengazi.

Witnesses said the armed men set fire to the consulate and fired shots into the air, burning much of the building.

n Cairo, protesters climbed the walls of the U.S. Embassy and brought down the American flag, replacing it with a black Islamist flag to protest a U.S.-produced film attacking the Prophet Muhammad.

The unrest in Cairo began when hundreds of protesters marched to the downtown embassy, gathering outside its walls and chanting against the movie and the U.S.

Dozens of protesters then scaled the embassy walls, and several went into the courtyard and took down the flag from a pole. They brought it back to the crowd outside, which tried to burn it, but failing that tore it apart.

The protesters on the wall then raised on the flagpole a black flag with a Muslim declaration of faith, “There is no god but God and Muhammad is his prophet.” The flag, similar to the banner used by al-Qaida, is commonly used by ultraconservatives around the region.

A senior Egyptian security official at the embassy area said authorities allowed the protest because it was “peaceful.”

Obama offers thanks to the Emir of Qatar--showboating some rather halting Arabic skills in addressing "His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani"--and praising the inspiring democratic example of the Arab Spring, which happened to leave the absolute monarchy of Qatar untouched.

He also offers support for his envoys, including Attorney General Eric Holder, who is attending the Arab Forum conference as the chief U.S. representative. The Arab Forum's goal is to recover assets stolen by formerly autocratic regimes, including Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya. (But not Qatar.)

Assault on U.S. consulate in Benghazi leaves 4 dead, including U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens

U.S. Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens was among four Americans killed in an attack by Muslim protesters on the U.S. consulate compound in Benghazi the previous evening, the U.S. government confirmed Wednesday.

Wanis al-Sharef, a Libyan Interior Ministry official in Benghazi, said the four Americans were killed when the angry mob, which gathered to protest a U.S.-made film that ridicules Islam's Prophet Muhammad, fired guns and burned down the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

Al-Sharef said two U.S. Marines sent to Benghazi when the clash erupted were shot and killed by the well-armed protesters.

"Obama, Obama there are still a billion Osamas," they chanted in reference to slain Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.

then we apologized on Sept 11 2012.
In a Tuesday statement, the US embassy condemned the "ongoing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the feelings of Muslims" and the continued attacks on the religious beliefs of others under the guise of "freedom of expression."

I am not sorry for the hurt feelings of a bunch of thin skinned whiny muslims.. grow up..

some obscure guy made a youtube film.. it really isn't a big deal.. sure show outrage.. but Burning our consulate.. killing our ambassador and staff.. and killing two of our marines.. is unacceptable.. period...

I am outraged that these scumsucking cowards tore down our flag and replaced it with their own.. in itself an act of war..

I am outraged that these gutless cowards sent in woman first to shield themselves.. and chanted support for a murderer on Sept 11 a day we lost thousands..

but I am even more outraged that our leadership took this as a moment to once again apologize ..

as for the killing of the marines and the ambassador.. and all those thousands of Americans since Sept 11, words can not say how outraged I am...

but I will try.. May God have mercy on your souls.

I will not hate you ..you can fester in your own hatred..

I am not ready to forgive.. and you have just scrapped the scab off a painful wound..

my heart wants to say..

go to Hell,... you bastard offspring of a pedophile devil worshiper..
your religion is disgusting and an insult to the world

but my religion and GOD requires that I pray for you... and I will...

May God have mercy on your souls and forgive your trespasses.

And may GOD forgive your trespasses,
as you forgive them that trespass against you..

and to grant you the mercy you have granted to others.

Amen.

All we ever hear from this Administration is attacks like this are done by a small fraction of radical Muslims. And most Muslims are peace loving. If that is true then why is it there home grown terrorists now hit the US and those upstanding Peace loving Muslims that live in the same communities where TERRORISTS are coming from are not pointing them out and showing any outrage for these murderous thugs actions. Their silence on these types of things don't play well with this Administrations claims that Muslim are not all the same. :?

Why, just why do the people still set back and let this happen. We conservative have had enough. You have spat on all our military, past and present.

Enough is enough.

If you don't have the guts to condemn these actions by the obama regime the blood may as well be on your hands

Funny how Obama went to Cairo in 2009 and claimed Islam is a tolerant religion. But make a joke about their God and you are targeted for assassination, make a 13 minute video about their God and innocent people at the US embassy are killed. THAT SURE SOUNDS TOLERANT DOESN"T IT????

The center-right Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung writes:

The deeply held American belief that all you have to do is liberate people from serfdom and dictatorship, and then democracy and a market economy will develop more or less on their own, burned to ash in the trial by fire of Iraq. A fact that academics and historically informed diplomats have always known can now be observed throughout the Arab world: Deeply ingrained cultural attitudes do not change simply because one political regime replaces another. In the long process of building a democratic society, it is not possible to simply skip stages."

The left-leaning Berliner Zeitung writes:

The US government can not be held responsible for that. But that clearly does not help US President Barack Obama very much. He has to bear the political consequences of the recent events by himself."

"Four years ago, Obama pledged to seek reconciliation with the Muslim world. Now, it is doubtful whether he has succeeded. The US and its European allies now have to ask themselves how much support they still enjoy in the countries of the Arab Spring."

The conservative Die Welt writes:

"US President Barack Obama's Middle East policy is in ruins. Like no president before him, he tried to win over the Arab world. After some initial hesitation, he came out clearly on the side of the democratic revolutions. … In this context, he must accept the fact that he has snubbed old close allies such as Israel, Saudi Arabia and the Egyptian military. And now parts of the freed societies are turning against the country which helped bring them into being. Anti-Americanism in the Arab world has even increased to levels greater than in the Bush era. It's a bitter outcome for Obama."

"Obama was naive to believe that one only needed to adopt a new tone and show more respect in order to dispel deep-seated reservations about the free world. In practice, the policies of the Obama administration in the region were not as naive as they may have seemed at times, and the Americans have always been much more involved in the Middle East than the passive Europeans. But Washington has provided the image of a distracted superpower in the process of decline to the societies there. This image of weakness is being exploited by Salafists and al-Qaida, who are active in North Africa from Somalia to Mali."

"One thing is clear: If jihadists believe they can attack American installations and kill an ambassador on the anniversary of Sept. 11, then America's deterrent power has declined considerably. For a superpower, it is not enough just to want to be loved. You have to scare the bad guys to keep them in check."

The mass-circulation daily Bild writes:

"Naked hatred is raging against a country that many people in the world regard as a symbol of freedom. When US flags burn, embassies are vandalized, and diplomats are murdered, it is an attack on the West, and not just America!"

"We rooted for the demonstrators at Tahrir Square, and many of us have longed to see democracy in the Arab nations. But democracy includes honoring the lives of fellow humans."

"The turmoil in Libya, Cairo, and Bangladesh is a return to the Middle Ages, when people were beheaded and stoned to death. No pathetic anti-Islam film can justify hate-filled murder."

"The West must be tough on terrorism. And it must show that it can differentiate between rabble-rousers and peaceful Muslims."

"Three years after Obama's speech in Cairo, which was supposed to initiate a new beginning in the Middle East, the United States now has even less support in the region than before."

seems Germany is not as enamored with Obama as they used to be...
