Each year the National Cattlemen award two Beef Quality Assurance awards; one for Beef and one for Dairy. This year the Dairy award went to Phoebe Bitler of Pennsylvania . The Beef award went to 101 Livestock. I was in San Antonio Texas last week to accept the award. It was an exciting week for everyone here and an honor to be nominated, let alone win. I know a lot of producers all across this country have been working to insure the consumer will continue to get the safest and highest quality product we can produce. We were nominated by Matt Burne, executive director of the California Cattlemen’s Association.
101 accepted this award on behalf of all our customers. It’s your extra effort at vaccinations, EID and animal care issues that make something like this possible.
The award was sponsored by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, Cargill, Safeway Rancher’s Reserve Beef, and the Beef Checkoff. I had the opportunity to spend some time with executives from all three entities and the discussions always centered on the consumer and our ability to meet their future needs. It was refreshing to look past our own personal needs and directly to the person who ultimately pays the bill. Quality and food safety issues start with vaccinations and good nutrition balanced with the proper minerals. These three things all work together and if we fail in any one of the three areas, the other two are not nearly so successful. Our efforts at the very beginning of the supply chain make it possible for others down the line to be successful in their efforts at food safety and beef quality. Electronic Identification was also a hot topic around the convention. First, everyone agrees it is the right thing to do.
A producer’s willingness to tag his calves means he is proud of what he produced and is willing to indentify the calf as his. While EID calves have received premiums in the past, it has been a spotty market. Last year however these premiums were a lot more consistent and 2010 promises to be a break-out year for source & aged calves. Both the domestic and international markets will require source, age, and EID cattle. It’s exciting to be on the leading edge of that technology for our customers.
Once again, thank you for making this award possible. We will continue our efforts to lead on marketing issues that promise to add value to your cattle.
