i have this original receipt from union stock yards in chicago from when my great grandfather Harry Taylor shipped his cattle by rail from outside of Des Moines to Chicago in 1918.It shows total weights and dollars for june 3rd 1918.
cattle have been in our family for generations but sadly the chain may be broken as in farming also
grandad had registered/purbred angus then in the 70's we started to crossbreed with the simm .my bros experimented with tarantaise and penzguar.
just thought i would share another old memory.

That is interesting, thanks for sharing.

gcreek, you're right, those cow prices are scary close to what we dealt with post bse. I sold cows for as little as $190 less commission and trucking. Convert that into Yankee dollars at the time and I would bet it be less than those 1915 prices.

Interesting to see that cow at 1310 lbs even back then.

seen a load of young bred hereford cows come thru the local auction barn in the mid to late seventies.they sold for 190.00 a head, the local bankers thought it was a bad investment and discouraged the buying of them.

now their bring'n 1400 dollars for heifers and they can't wait to loan money.i am saving to pay cash when the market crashes again.
