Help Support Ranchers.net:

I just found out yesterday that my cousin is going to Minot to
drive truck. He is 26 years old, served two tours in Afghanistan,
was injured three times, once very badly and HE CAN'T FIND
WORK IN CALIFORNIA. He has gone to truck driving school
and found a good job in Minot so he and his family are moving.

I wish them the best. If he can survive Afghanistan, he
should be able to survive a winter in Minot. Anyway, they are
excited. So much for jobs in the state of 'the land of plenty,'
At least he looked for work, didn't think someone owed him
something.

I sure hope he can find somewhere to live. That is one of the biggest problems in NW North Dakota for all these workers.

Good for him!!!

I have that same concern...the company has someone looking for
a place to RENT...that's pretty scary when you have a youngster
and you are moving to a boomtown. I wish I knew what to do to
help them find something. The cost of renting is one thing, but finding
something decent to live in, that's the big issue. They are pretty
excited and I really hope it works out for them.

Not only a boomtown but one that just have a 100 year flood that wiped out alot of homes. I wish them lots of luck in finding something suitable.

Many people in Alberta are not opposed to living in an RV, whether long term or short, when working in the patch. Is that an option?

They're living in old rail cars in parts of ND...Problem with R.V.'s is the winter... The old airmen used to say there was only one place colder (and windier) then Glasgow AFB or Minot AFB- and that was Tule Greenland...

Your winters are no more harsh than ours here in Alberta. Do you know where Fort McMurray is?

You can buy an insulated "cover" for your winterized RV.

I've done it at -40 C

Modular houses are becoming quite popular again. We used to call them trailers but they make some pretty nice ones now.
I heard a place in Weyburn advertising a 2 bedroom 1000sq. ft for $57,700.
At $2000 a month rent if you can find something for that the new price doesn't sound that bad. :?
