Project Gun Runner (Fast and Furious) was launched under the orders of President Barack Obama with the knowledge of Attorney General Eric Holder. Deputy Attorney General David Ogden announced the Obama Administration's new and aggressive 'comprehensive plan' on March, 24, 2009. The plan was aimed at disrupting gun trafficking between the United States and Mexico.

"Well first of all I did not authorize it. Eric Holder the Attorney General did not authorize it. He's been very clear that our policy is to catch gun runners and put 'em into jail," Mr. Obama said of the controversial ATF operation called "Fast and Furious."

"Absolutely not," said Mr. Obama. "There may be a situation here which a serious mistake was made and if that's the case then we'll find out and well hold somebody accountable."

Holder told the audience:

"Last week, our administration launched a major new effort to break the backs of the cartels. My department is committing 100 new ATF personnel to the Southwest border in the next 100 days to supplement our ongoing Project Gunrunner, DEA is adding 16 new positions on the border, as well as mobile enforcement teams, and the FBI is creating a new intelligence group focusing on kidnapping and extortion."

While Holder was giving that speech in April of 2009, this is what was going on in here that month:

...part of the Bush legacy will be the total incompetence of Administration attorneys and complete internal breakdown within the US Attorney Generals office.....From prosecuters I've talked to- morale was nonexistent anymore down on the front line levels because they knew many of the things that were happening or even they were being asked to do were illegal/unconstitutional...

I'm happy to see the new Attorney General do the right thing- and if the government broke the law- didn't follow the rules- admit it instead of trying to cover it up like Mukasey was...
