23andMe Is Terrifying, but Not for the Reasons the FDA Thinks
The genetic-testing company's real goal is to hoard your personal data

Sound and thought out article. Of note, the relationship of one of the founders of 23andMe, Anne Wojcicki, is presently married to Sergei Brin, the founder of Google. Google's function was data mining. Her sister is CEO of Youtube.

Of all the nefarious things discussed in the article, they left some of the worst out.

One being the potential to use this information to exploit the black market of organ harvesting. Yes, organ harvesting in 3rd world countries is a massive business. You won't see it on the news, but it exists.

Now think about those same people being armed with not only your genetic information and rather or not you possess the necessary match for organ transplant, but they also possessed all the information that google or facebook affords them. Where you live, where you work, times you are at work, your locations when you log in, places people check in to eat, shop, family members, friends and the list goes on an on.

But people give it away for free and the tech to gather it is subsidized heavily.

My parents received 23 and Me tests for Christmas. At the risk of offending the gift givers, I told them that I thought it was a p.iss poor idea to send in a sample, and they agreed. Just my gut instinct. For a joke they thought about getting a sample from someone of a totally different ethnicity.

Amazon Ring Gave Employees Unrestricted Access to Footage of Customers’ Homes

Ring, a home security camera company owned by Amazon, allowed employees unrestricted access to the cameras inside people’s homes, according to a report from the Intercept.

The Intercept reported last week that Ring “provided its Ukraine-based research and development team virtually unfettered access to a folder on Amazon’s S3 cloud storage service that contained every video created by every Ring camera around the world.”

“This would amount to an enormous list of highly sensitive files that could be easily browsed and viewed. Downloading and sharing these customer video files would have required little more than a click,” the Intercept explained, adding that “the video files were left unencrypted,” and the “Ukraine team was also provided with a corresponding database that linked each specific video file to corresponding specific Ring customers.”
